Gary Phelps Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCorkle Funeral Home - Rockton on Mar. 4, 2026.
Gary B. Phelps, 83, of Rockton, Illinois, passed away on March 1, 2026, at Beloit Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born on August 26, 1942, in Belvidere, Illinois, to H. Bruce and Helen Mae (Carver) Phelps. He graduated from West High School, Class of 1960, and Rockford College with a Bachelor of Science in 1964. Most recently he worked as an Inventory Control Manager at Amerock/Newell Corporation, retiring in August of 2002.

As a young man, Gary was heavily involved with the Boy Scouts of America, eventually earning his Eagle Scout badge. He embodied their pledge of leadership, service, and character.

He was an avid fisherman and bowler, though he didn't always get a strike. He spent many happy hours in his woodworking shop or playing one of his keyboards, and you could often find him with a camera or tennis racket in his hand or puttering around the yard. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed biking, kayaking, and walking the family dog. Later in life he volunteered with Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful and led efforts for their annual clothing drives and Great American Cleanup events.

When he wasn't participating in sports, he was cheering on his favorite sports teams, the Chicago Bears and St. Louis Cardinals, and it's suspected he was an even bigger fan of Peanut Butter M&M's.

He was an amazing father, husband, son, brother, uncle, co-worker and friend. His quick wit made people laugh, he was always willing to help, and he will be missed.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Karen (Fagerburg); his daughter, Molly (Mike) Butz; niece, Jennifer M. Bell; and other close relatives including Rod and Jan Fagerburg; Jerry and Diana Ogren; Jim Fagerburg; and the David Fagerburg family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Judith Sue Bell.

Cremations Rites to be Accorded. In keeping with his wishes, no services are planned.
