Robert Ponto Obituary
Born in Camden, New Jersey on January 13, 1947, Bob lived a life marked by kindness, hard work, and an unwavering love for his family and community. Bob graduated from Deptford Township High School in New Jersey where he was known for his leadership and athletic abilities. He played football and baseball, participated in bowling and newspaper and was the Student Council President. He earned a degree in Sociology from Rutgers University and worked in the commercial insurance field in Los Angeles as an underwriter. He was a Senior Underwriter for Mission Insurance Company, Harbor Insurance Company and then focused on the brokerage side before retiring from Gallagher and Gallagher.
Beyond his professional life, Bob was an avid golf enthusiast and was known for his "snarky" attitude. Fortunately, he didn't have to depend on his earnings to eat. Bob cherished time spent with his family, whether gathered around the dinner table, traveling with his wife and dog, Hope, or sharing stories on the porch. He was known for his warm smile, his quick wit, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome. He loved his family and his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them and cheering for them at their various sporting events in both Pennsylvania and Texas.
Waiting for him in Heaven are his mother Katherine (Urban) Ponto, father Augustus Julius Ponto, Jr., his brothers Ronald Ponto and Augustus (Gus) Ponto, III and his beloved wife, JoAnne Blackwelder Ponto. He lived through the sudden loss of his "Joey" in a tragic traffic accident and his own broken body parts by devoting countless hours to helping others in Grief Share.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sherrie McPherson Ponto; his children, Robert William Ponto, Jr. and wife Kristine; Michael Augustus Ponto and wife Sue; Sean Timothy McAlister and wife Stephanie; Troy Jackson McAlister and wife Courtney; his grandchildren, Timothy Ponto, Victoria Ponto, Ryan Smolik, Kelly Smolik, Samantha Ponto, Valerie Ponto, Ashley Ponto, Jordan McAlister, Katelyn McAlister, Ryan McAlister and Jackson McAlister; and many extended family members and friends who will carry his memory forward.
A memorial service to celebrate Bob's life will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM at First Methodist Conroe, 4308 W Davis St., Conroe, Texas 77304.
Bob's legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will continue to inspire those who knew him. Well-loved today, tomorrow and always.
