Robert “Rod” Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Garr Funeral Services on Dec. 9, 2025.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Rodney Merten II "Rod", a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Rod passed away peacefully on Friday, December 5th, 2025, at the age of 55. Born on a brisk Saturday, January 3rd, 1970, in Dallas, TX, Rod made his home in Memphis, IN, where he spent his final years thriving in the warmth of family and friends.

Rod was a talented and dedicated manager, known for his sharp mind and an amazing sense of humor that often leaned towards the twisted side. His unique perspective on life brought joy and laughter to those around him, marking him as a cherished presence in both his professional and personal circles.

A man deeply devoted to his family, Rod was affectionately committed to the traditional Sunday breakfast at Austin and Megan's, and as well as Sunday dinners he hosted each week, where he showcased his homestyle cooking, and his love for preparing unique desserts. Family was at the core of his being, and he created lasting memories, especially during the well-loved annual Cousin Camp.

Rod's passions extended beyond the confines of his home. He was an enthusiastic debater, always eager to engage in lively discussions. A fervent supporter of IU sports, he cheered passionately from the stands or the comfort of his living room. An avid bird hunter, he found peace in the wilderness, and his admiration for classic cars revealed a nostalgic appreciation for the elegance of the past.

He leaves behind a legacy of love through his beloved wife of 31 years, Kim, three sons: Austin Merten (Megan), Colton Merten, and Brody Merten, who will carry forward his treasured values and continue his wonderfully unique traditions. Rod is also survived by his loving mother Trish Brote, caring mother-in-law, Yvonne Fuller, and father-in-law, Chuck Fuller, as well as his dear sister, Heather Hodges (Justin) and nephews Lawton and Luke. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Merten Sr., whom he has joined in eternal rest.

To honor Rod's life, the family welcomes friends and loved ones to a visitation at Garr Funeral Home in Sellersburg (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) on Friday, December 12th, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A memorial service celebrating his life will follow at 6:00 pm, also at Garr Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Rod's memory to the American Heart Association or simply by sharing a laugh in remembrance of a life lived with humor and heart.

Sad to hear about the loss of Rod. I worked with him for many years at Bass Pro Shops. He was the best at drafting the schedule, very fair and thoughtful. He was a good man. Sorry for your loss!
