Robert Sargent Obituary

Robert L. "Bob" Sargent, Jr.

July 27, 1930 - March 15, 2025

West Columbia, South Carolina - Robert L. "Bob" Sargent, Jr. of West Columbia, SC went to his eternal home in Heaven on March 15, 2025. Mr. Sargent was born in Flint, Michigan on July 27, 1930, to Robert L. Sargent, Sr. and Cora Ross Sargent. After twenty years of proud service, he retired from the United States Marine Corps with the rank of Warrant Officer; his thirteen service medals include the Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry. Mr. Sargent worked in various capacities in the Radiology Department at Prisma Baptist Hospital for over 20 years and logged over 11,000 hours there as a volunteer. A self-taught and talented multi-instrumentalist, Mr. Sargent especially loved leading and composing music for the handbell choir at his church; an exceptionally skilled craftsman and artist, his magnificent stained glass art graces many homes and businesses throughout the area. Mr. Sargent is survived by his loving wife of seventy-four years and eight months, Jessie Mae (Potter) Sargent, his three children Michael, Cheryl, and Scott, many grandchildren and great grandchildren with a new generation on the way, and his brother, Jim Sargent. Mr. and Mrs. Sargent were dedicated members of Platt Springs United Methodist Church in West Columbia for nearly fifty years; a celebration of the life of Bob Sargent will be held there at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 6th, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the handbell choir fund at the church.

Bob was a Rad Tech at Baptist Hospital when I was a Radiology student there. He was always willing to help us. Always smiling and giving us advise. May Jesus comfort the family in the days to come.

Great Uncle Bob was an amazing uncle and person. He always had a smile on his face and greeted you with the best hugs. You never wondered if he liked you, he made it clear that he loved you. When I graduated from college with my degree in dance education other people said I would never find a job - he created a beautiful stain glass pointe shoe to hang in my classroom. He also created original pieces for both my children when they were born. We are continually surrounded by his love and reminded of his presence. I am so happy he is not longer in pain but we will miss him greatly here on earth.

Was an X-ray student at baptist school of radiology when he worked there and worked with him after graduating. He was always a very kind and happy person. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family .

I heard about Mr. Bob from friends in Manila. They all suggested I "had" to meet him. They were concerned about me- that I didn´t already know him. Then, I met Mr. Bob. The Filipino friends had been right.

I stood beside Bob in the choir fro many years and was so blessed to have him as a friend. I will never forget him telling me, "Paul, you may not hit every note correctly, but you do so with confidence.". My wife and I were also blessed to have been on a mission trip to Moscow in 2003 with Bob. He was an exceptional man and I will miss him and look forward to him greeting me when we next meet. Praying for Jessie as she goes through the mourning process. God bless the family.

Mr. Bob was my surrogate father on the mission field. We first took off together to St. Croix back in 1996 to repair some hurricane damage. For the next 20 years we wandered all over the globe together building churches, building memories and having the time of our lives serving the Lord Jesus Christ and His people. From St. Croix, to Moscow, to Manilla, to Cali and many points in-between we shared one another´s passion for mission work. I loved Mr. Bob. Make that I love Mr. Bob. I wish could see him now: brand new, ready to head off into the wild blue yonder again. I will miss him. The world is dimmer today at his passing. I look forward to hugging his neck the next time I see him.
