Robert “Bob” Francis Schaecher, 85, passed away surrounded by family on February 5, 2026. Bob lived a life devoted to education, his family, and the international school community, leaving a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and friends around the world.
Born in San Leandro, California, Bob was the son of Grace and Frank Schaecher. He was a proud alumnus of Bishop O’Dowd High School, Class of 1958, and Saint Mary's College of California, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Administration in 1962. He later completed his master’s degree in School Administration at California State University, East Bay, in 1969.
Bob began his career in education as a middle school teacher of Social Studies and English, later becoming an assistant principal. His interest in international travel inspired his move to England where he served as Elementary Principal of the American School in London (ASL) from 1975 to 1984. In 1985, he became the Headmaster of the Antwerp International School in Belgium, where he earned the nickname “Bob the Builder” for guiding the school through a remarkable period of growth and transformation. During his career he also served as Chairman of the Board of ECIS, contributing to international education across Europe. He retired in 2005 after four decades of dedicated service.
Bob married Carmen Lewis in 1967. They had two sons, Dennis and Eric. After Carmen's passing in 1976, Bob married Pamela Howard. They were married for 48 years, retiring in Chapel Hill, NC. Bob enjoyed his summers on Nantucket, MA, especially mooring his boat in Hither Creek, watching sunsets from his deck, sipping wine at the Anglers Club, and riding his bike on the Madaket bike path. He cherished time with his grandchildren, who affectionally knew him as “Opa”.
Bob was a mentor, devoted partner, caring father, and loving grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Pam; his son, Dennis; his grandchildren, Sara, Sadie, and Dylan; his sister, Mary Anne Byers; and his dog, Maxton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen; his son, Eric; and his sister, Jeanne Matson.
A memorial service will be held this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the University of North Carolina Lymphoma Research Fund in Bob’s memory.
