It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert "Bobby" A. Schreck, who died peacefully at the age of 78 on July 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and friends, following a year-long battle with bladder cancer.
Bobby was born on September 3, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the second oldest of eleven children and had fond memories of running the streets of West Louisville with his siblings and neighborhood friends.
A proud graduate of Flaget High School (Class of '64), Bobby also served in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam War. After completing a tool and die apprenticeship program, he began his career with General Electric's prestigious Equipment Development Lab. He spent 38 years at Appliance Park, where he excelled as an automated equipment developer and model maker.
Bobby was a devoted husband, father, Pawpaw, brother, uncle, and friend. He is remembered for his creativity, precision, and uncanny ability to solve any technical problem. He was kind and humble, always willing to lend a hand. Most home projects in the family began with a call to Bobby-which usually ended with scheduling a time for him to come by in person. In his free time, he designed and built one-of-a-kind wooden grandfather clocks.
His greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Bobby and Mary Ellen spent countless hours cheering on their kids and grandkids at sporting events, performances, and celebrations. They loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures with family and friends, including cruises, camping trips, visits to Ireland, and time at beaches near and far.
Anyone who grew up around the Schreck family likely spent time at their camp at Nolin Lake, a 1950s New Moon mobile home that was lovingly built up over 45 years. Bobby had a love-hate relationship with boating and taught a record number of kids to water ski in the '80s and '90s.
He was a faithful member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church for over 50 years, where he generously gave his time and talents as a volleyball coach, referee, and community service volunteer.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Mary Ellen (Nohalty); his daughter, Melissa (Glen); his sons, Drew (Melissa) and Tony (Paula); and his beloved grandchildren: Maddie, Hannah, Julia, Dillon, Lauren, Marissa, William, Maeve, and Abram. He is also survived by his siblings: Mark (Kevin), Larry (Gail), Bill (Rose), Marilyn (Michael), Peggy (Brad), Ray (Johanna), and Paul (Debbie); as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Mary Schreck; his sisters, Jeanie Brown (Greg) and Mary Jo Schreck; his brother, Louie Schreck; and his nephew, Joey Schreck.
Bobby's quiet wisdom, sweet temperament, and warm smile will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 15, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home (3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218). Official sharing of memories will begin at 6:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, July 16, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Athanasius Catholic Church (5915 Outer Loop, Louisville, KY 40219).
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Community Outreach of St. Athanasius (COSA) in Bobby's honor.
