Robert Rex Shelander, known as Bob to his friends and family, passed away July 18, 2025. He was born May 24, 1946 to the late Lawrence LeRoy and Frances Ruth (Sutherland) Shelander in Cadillac, Michigan.
Bob was graduated from Clare High School. He then attended Central Michigan University, majoring in history. He also played the saxophone as a member of the marching band. While studying at CMU, Bob was drafted in the United States Army. While serving in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star working as a Fire Directional Control Specialist, assisting artillery in their missions.
Bob was hired into Dow Chemical as a Pool Operator in 1976. He then became a production operator at the High Gloss ABS plant 1053 building. Bob retired from Advanced Electronic Materials 768 building in 2003.
Bob enjoyed chess, reading, classical music, and opera. He was also a talented baker, cook, and gardener. Bob was a loyal Detroit Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings fan.
Bob was kind, intelligent, generous, and loving.
He is survived by his wife and partner of over 40 years, Frances Bedolla; his son, Ryan Robert Shelander; brother, Stefan (Sue) Shelander; sister, Susan (Steve) Case; brothers-in-law, James (Dana) Bedolla and Marcelino (Anna) Bedolla; sisters-in-law, Lynda Wagner and Mary (Anthony) Serrano; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence LeRoy Shelander, Jr.
A celebration of Bob's life will take place from 12 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at the Great Hall Banquet and Convention Center, 5121 Bay City Road, Midland, Michigan.
