Robert A. Shellum, 97, of Shevlin, Minnesota died on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at the Sanford Medical Center, Bemidji, Minnesota.
Robert Alexander was born on April 10, 1926 to parents Joseph and Nellie (Hagen) Shellum in Fergus Falls, MN. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII, in September of 1944, where he spent 6 months in Okinawa. During his time in the Army, he was a driver in Korea on patrol, was a demolitions expert and flame thrower that blew up caves and Ammo dump. Robert obtained a purple heart, a combat infantry badge, and a bronze star before getting honorably discharged in 1946. He married his wife, Margaret Bednar, in Wilton, MN in 1950. Together they took over their family Dairy farm where they enjoyed raising their two children, Kenneth and Sharon. Robert worked construction for many years building houses and making cabinets.
He is survived by his children- Ken (Anita) Shellum and Sharon (Earl) Harwood; 7 grandchildren- Philip, Jessica, Angela, Jacob, Sarah, Melissa, and Michael; 10 great-grandchildren; brother- Harold Shellum; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years- Margie; sisters- Alice of Park Rapids, MN; Mildred of Madison, WI; Alma of Erskine, MN; Esther of Bagley, MN; brother- Kenneth; and his parents, Joe and Nellie Shellum.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., following the visitaiton. A Funeral Mass with Father JohnMelkies Suvakeen will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bagley, Minnesota with a visitation held one hour prior. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Bagley, MN.
The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with arrangements.
