Robert E. Sjogren, PhD, age 90, of Lake Monticello, Virginia, went to be with his Lord on February 27, 2022. Doctor Bob, as he was affectionately known, passed away peacefully, with loved ones by his side.
He was born in Schenectady, New York. He received degrees from Cornell University and the University of Cincinnati. One of his greatest joys was teaching. He was Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Vermont. He held joint appointments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, as well as the College of Medicine. He served as faculty and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry and was privileged to teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level for 31 years.
He proudly served in the United States Army, 73rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He received the National Defense Service Medal. Upon honorable release from active military service, he remained an Army reservist for eight years.
After retirement from the University of Vermont, he and his beloved wife, Claire (Clara Braun Sjogren) moved to Lake Monticello, VA. In Doctor Bob's own words, "It is through HIS grace and blessing, that I was honored to be married to my best friend, soul-mate, and inspiration." Claire's passing on December 24, 2013, left his heart heavy; but his unyielding faith and love for the Lord gave him comfort knowing that she is with Christ.
Doctor Bob was a talented artist. He took his inspiration from God's creation and guidance, which lead him to produce beautiful landscapes, seascapes, floral, and wildlife art using mixed media and three-dimensional collage. He also enjoyed visiting museums, art shows, and staying current on events in microbiology and his new interest – physics.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Claire; parents, Eric and Elizabeth Sjogren; and sister, Lois (Arnold) Glover. He is survived by his friend and "son at heart", Ronnie Finchum; niece Linda (Douglas) Williams and their six children and three grandchildren; niece Madeline (Tom) Braun Williams; nephew, Richard (Bonnie) Glover and their four children; nephew, Stephen (Amy) Braun and daughter, Timothy (Eleanor) Braun and their three children. Left to carry on his legacy are his much-valued students, especially those that brought him immense joy over the decades by excelling in their fields of study and vocations, visiting, calling, and the sending of cards and letters – he truly loved you all. He also leaves behind many devoted friends, colleagues, and brethren in faith.
Doctor Bob's life was guided by one of his favorite Bible verses: "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and breath of all mankind." (Job 12:7-10, NIV) In his parting days, he commented, "I'm ready. I've done it all".
Initial services and arrangements were provided by Teague Funeral Service, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
A private graveside service with full military honors will be held at the Rosemont Cemetery, Route 519, Delaware Township, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
Memorial contributions may be made to Charles Stanley's In-Touch Ministry or a charity of choice.
