Robert A. “Bob” Slater, Sr., 85, of Ocean Springs, MS, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at his home. Born on September 25, 1940, Bob dedicated his life to service, both in the military and to his family. He proudly served in the US Air Force for over 20 years. His military career took him to various parts of the world, including a tour to Korea. Throughout his miliary career, he was stationed at bases in England, Hawaii, California, and Mississippi. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and he was a source of inspiration to all who knew him. Following his military service, Bob continued to serve his fellow miliary community in civilian service at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi for another 20 years.
His sons remember what a dedicated father he was during their childhood as he spent time with his family taking them to church, coaching them in multiple sports, spending quality time in their backyard practicing, and helping them with homework. He displayed servanthood to them in significant ways. He was a wonderful father even as they entered adulthood and was always willing to lend a helping hand as needed.
In his retirement, Bob enjoyed quality time with friends and family. He was known for having a pleasant disposition and making every person feel welcome and appreciated. His infectious laugh was loved by all.
Bob enjoyed many sports as player and spectator. Bob was an avid bowler and accomplished to score 300 on three occasions. He enjoyed sharing his love of the game with his five grandchildren who have fond memories of their time with Grandpa every Christmas at the lanes. Bob also loved golf and spending quality time on the greens with his friends. One of his favorite seasons was football, when he avidly followed the Detroit Lions football team.
Bob is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Shirley Steele Slater of Ocean Springs, MS; and brother, Jim Slater of Ann Arbor, MI. His is also survived by his sons, James R. Slater (Kimberly) of Hattiesburg, MS and Robert A. Slater, Jr of Ocean Springs, MS. He leaves to cherish his memory his granddaughter, Madison Slater Robbins (Drew) of Sumrall, MS; grandson, Jacob Slater of Ocean Springs, MS; granddaughter, Hayden Slater of Hattiesburg, MS; grandson, Austin Slater of Ocean Springs, MS; and granddaughter, Jordan Slater of Hattiesburg, MS. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Agnes Emmons Slater; and brother, Fred Slater.
A Memorial Service to honor Bob’s life will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Christus Victor Lutheran Church at 2755 Bienville Blvd, Ocean Springs, MS 39564. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, that donations to Gideons International be made via www.sendtheword.org so that the Word of God may be shared with others.
