Robert "RJ" Smith, age 89, of Tahoe City, California, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, in California. RJ grew up in the rural Elkton area. Funeral services will be 2:30 P.M. on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Elkton with burial to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Robert Smith, a beloved friend, Vietnam Veteran, adventurer, and kind soul, passed away peacefully. Born and raised on a family farm in Elkton, South Dakota, Robert learned the values of hard work and perseverance early in life. He pursued his education at Arizona State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1961.
A man of diverse talents, Robert also earned his pilot's license, reflecting his lifelong love of exploration and adventure. Robert proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, embodying courage and dedication. Following his service, he continued his commitment to making the world a better place by volunteering with organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, helping those in need.
An adventurer at heart, Robert lived a life full of rich experiences. He rode bucking horses in rodeos across the western United States, skied the majestic mountains of Tahoe well into his 80s, and traveled extensively throughout Asia. A Harley enthusiast, he explored the open roads of the western U.S. on his motorcycle. In 1973, Robert built a home overlooking the west shore of Lake Tahoe, a place that brought him immense joy and peace. It remained his cherished residence until his passing.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Lila and Joseph, and his brothers, Alfred and Richard. He is survived by Aneta Kurz and her daughter, Amelka. Though Robert was a private man, he touched the lives of those around him with his adventurous spirit, unwavering kindness, and quiet generosity. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
