Mr. Robert Stuart Smith, age 89, of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away on May 18th, 2025. He was the son of Robert Bell Smith and Esther Jane Stuart Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Betty R. Smith, and his brother, Richard Bell Smith.
He is survived by his sons Stuart R. Smith (Kathryn) of West Chester, PA, Christopher B. Smith (Jennifer) of Randolph, NJ, and Andrew H. Smith (Anusha) of Drury, MO, and daughter Ann Whitney Coe of Ijamsville, MD, grandchildren Brad Coe, Zachary Coe (Megan), Alexandra Smith, Mason Smith, Rachel Smith, Charles Smith, and Robert Rohan Smith as well as great-grandchildren Wesley, Isla, and Sophie Coe.
Mr. Smith grew up in Buzzards Bay, MA and graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in 1957. He joined General Electric Company's Business Training Course in Schenectady, NY, before enrolling in the US Navy's Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. He served on the staff of the Commander in Chief Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, VA for 3 years, and then returned to GE in 1961.
He had several specialist and managerial assignments in the field of information systems with GE locations in Louisville, KY, Columbia, MD, Schenectady, NY, and Stamford, CT.
He retired from GE in January 1997, and moved to Hilton Head, where he was an active member of The Golf Club at Indigo Run. He also served as a volunteer for Second Helpings (a food distribution charity), The Boys & Girls Club's "Hooked on Golf" program, and the Hilton Head Island Computer Club. He was also secretary for his alumni class at Wesleyan University.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Memory Matters in Hilton Head, SC.
