Obituary published on Legacy.com by Martin & Hightower Funeral Home - Carrollton on Jan. 7, 2026.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert Winford Smith Jr., age 71, of Roopville, Georgia, who passed away on January 5, 2026. Born on September 30, 1954, Robert lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of the outdoors.
Robert was a steady and dependable presence throughout his life. For more than 47 years, he dedicated himself to his work as a Maintenance Clerk at Southwire, a career that reflected his strong work ethic, reliability, and pride in a job well done. He believed in showing up, doing things right, and providing for his family; values he lived by every day.
Outside of work, Robert felt most at peace in nature. He loved hunting and fishing, and those quiet hours outdoors were some of his most cherished moments. Whether casting a line or sitting patiently in a deer stand, he found joy in the stillness and often shared those experiences with his family, creating memories that will be carried on for generations.
Above all else, Robert was a family man. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Peggy Chambers Smith, and a loving father to his sons and daughter-in-law, Jon and Sunshine Smith and Adam Smith, and his daughter and son-in-law, Rebekah and Matt Kuhbach. He took great pride in being a grandfather to Grier Smith and his wife, Logan; Jonathan Smith and his significant other, Emaley Kelley; and a great-grandfather to Finn Smith, who brought him immense joy.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Winford Smith Sr. and Anysteen Smith; his brother, David Smith; and his sister, Lisa Moody.
Funeral services will be held on January 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Martin & Hightower Funeral Home, with Bro. Jon Smith officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Following the service, Robert will be cremated, and his remains will be laid to rest in a private family service in the Kansas Baptist Church Cemetery.
Robert will be remembered for his quiet strength, steady presence, and the love he had for his family and the outdoors. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the memories he made, and the example he set.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in memory of Robert to the
American Cancer Society or Tanner Hospice Care. Donations may be made online or by mail, with checks payable to either organization.
The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Tanner Hospice Care for the compassionate, attentive, and dignified care shown to Robert during his final days. Their kindness and support brought comfort not only to Robert, but to his entire family, and will always be remembered.
