Robert Eugene Sterns III, age 86, passed away on January 19, 2026, in Portland, Texas.He was born in Houston, Texas, and moved to Ingleside, Texas at the age of 10, where he was raised. Robert attended Del Mar College before continuing his education at the University of Texas Dental School in Houston.
Following dental school, Robert proudly served in the United States Air Force as a dentist at the Air Force Academy Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. After completing his military service, he and his wife, Sandra Sterns, moved to Portland, Texas, where he opened his dental practice and served the community for many years with dedication and compassion.
Robert was known for his strong work ethic, his commitment to his patients, and his quiet generosity. Outside of dentistry, he was an avid golfer who made many of his own sets of golf clubs and was a founding member of Northshore Country Club. He and Sandra also hosted multiple golf professionals in their home during Nike Tour events held at Northshore, reflecting both their love of the game and their warm hospitality.
His many other passions included jewelry making, running a ranch, raising cattle, fishing, duck and deer hunting, building his own guns and bullets, and collecting coins, clarinet horns, and electric train sets. A true craftsman, Robert was rarely without a project and always eager to learn something new.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Bob Sterns; his mother, Mabel Sterns; and his brother, Johnny Sterns.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Sterns; his children, Robin Warren (Micky Warren) and Jennifer James (Darren James); his grandchildren, Holden Linder (Ashly Linder), Alyssa Barrera, Shea Duncan (Karla Duncan), Jordyn Duncan, and Andi Duncan; and six great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at Winstead’s Funeral Home on February 21, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Robert will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his service to his country, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
