Robert “Bob” Eugene Sterrett, 85, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025.
Bob was born on February 11, 1940, to Carlton and Opal Sterrett in Indianapolis, Indiana, and spent his life putting family and community first. He married his high school sweetheart, Roberta, on September 10, 1960, and they shared more than 49 wonderful years together until her passing in 2009. He was a proud dad to Robert Sterrett, Rebecca Owens (Don), and Ronald Sterrett (Jeff), and an even prouder grandpa to Cody, Andrew, and Alexis. He never missed a game, event, or moment to show up for the people he loved.
Bob worked as an electrical engineer at Indiana Bell, but his true passion was public service. He served 12 years on the Lawrence City Council and was elected the city’s second Mayor, serving from 1984 to 1987. He later took on roles as Town Manager in both Fortville and Pendleton and eventually returned to Lawrence as Building Commissioner until his retirement.
Bob was known for his kindness, sense of humor, loyalty, and his deep devotion to the people around him. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his family – especially cheering on his kids and grandkids at their games and activities.
He is also survived by his sisters, Linda White and Betty Halliburton, who remained close throughout his life and shared in many cherished family memories.
He’ll be remembered for his big heart, steady presence, and the way he made everyone feel supported and loved.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229) from 4 – 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East at 11 am. Entombment will take place following services at Washington Park East Cemetery.”
