Robert Tabakin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 22 to Mar. 25, 2023.
Robert Bennett Tabakin 03/20/1956 - South Burlington, VT 03/21/2023 - Pittsfield, MA

Bob Tabakin, MD, 67, of Pittsfield, MA died March 21, 2023 surrounded by his family. Despite a nearly 20 year battle with Parkinson's, Bob fully embraced life with courage, grace, denial, and his gentle and wry sense of humor. He was the middle of 5 sons of Burt and Ruth Tabakin - a family that loved sailing on Lake Champlain and skiing on Mount Mansfield. He earned his B.S. in engineering from MIT where he was a member of the blackjack team.

After several years of ski bumming and management consulting, he began a career in medicine, first attending UMASS Medical School, and then completing Psychiatry residency at Harvard Longwood, where he met and married his co-resident Liza Donlon.

Bob and Liza moved from Boston to the Berkshires in 2000, where they raised their 2 sons Max and Isaac. Bob loved life in the Berkshires. He practiced Psychiatry at the Brien Center for a decade, and skied in the Bousquet adult race league, both of which he continued for many years despite the progression of his illness. Bob had a generous spirit. He loved and was loved by many.

Local friends can join family for calling hours on Thursday, March 23, from 4-6PM and Saturday, March 25 from 3-5PM at 196 Bartlett Ave, Pittsfield. A celebration of Bob's life will be held later this spring. To add to the Book of Memories, please visit flynndagnolifuneralhomes.com.

I met Bobby in 1986 at Bain. We moved in the same office space together and spent many after work activities in Boston. When I moved out of my apt and had only a temporary bedroom in a condemned house in Cambridge (Bobby made lots of jokes about it) I crashed a number of nights at his place downtown. My wife and I visited him in Burlington in 1989. I consider him one of the closest friends I have.

Was a close and wonderful friend. Spent many wonderful hours during and after Bain tenure in the late 80s. RIP my brother...

Oh Bob what a dynamic spirit and personality you were!!! Getting to know you, your sence of humor and desire to remain present for your family will forever stay a precious memory. I considered you my friend and being a caregiver for you for over a year I learned so much, not only about the Parkinsons journey and the many challenges, but how important your determination played in your survival. Also, you kicked my butt in Trivia every time! You were so sharp! I learned about your life daily and how proud you were of your wife, your two boys and your love for tootsie pops. No more lollipop drop offs, so long my dear, dear friend.

Bob was a light to the world, his family and his friends. I worked with Bob at the Brien Center and he felt deeply for his patients and their struggles. He moved through a long, challenging illness with grace and a sense of humor. Bob, we love you and will miss you. Liza, Max and Isaac are in our hearts.

It was a privilege to train alongside Bob. I find myself thinking about his smile and laugh often in the last few days. My heart is with Liza and their 2 sons.

To Liza, Isaac and Max,

Your father was a very kind and nice person we always loved seeing in the Bousquet Lodge. His prescience will be missed. My condolences to all of you. RIP Bob.

My deepest condolences to the family of Bobby. I was a schoolmate in middle school and high school in So. Burlington. Bobby was a sweet, kind, energetic boy, a tousled redhead, with that Tabakin impish smile and a ready humor, intellect, gregariousness. Always a loving boy and teenager. We all used to hang out as kids in middle school. My deepest sympathies to his family and community. Laura
