Roberta Lennox Dougherty

December 5, 1943 - January 3, 2026

Roberta Lennox Dougherty, 82, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Mays Landing, N.J., passed away on Saturday, January 3, after an extended illness. Roberta was born on December 5, 1943, in Philadelphia to the late Robert and Helen "Bessie" (Beaston) Lennox. She grew up in Philadelphia and spent summers in Ocean City, N.J., with her sister, Helen, and Beaston family cousins.

She graduated from John Bartram High School, where she played on both the basketball and tennis teams. She furthered her education at The Pennsylvania State University, majoring in Spanish and Secondary Education. Roberta was a founding member of the PSU Alpha Sigma Alpha Chapter, where she made lifelong friends whom she treasured

Her first teaching position was at Mainland Regional High School, in Northfield, N.J. She went on to teach Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL) at several different high schools, including Our Lady of Mercy Academy and Absegami High School, during her teaching career. She also had her own business, named "Let's Talk," teaching ESL to casino employees.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Thomas; her son, Thomas Dougherty II (Michael Coffin); her daughter, Janet Dougherty Butts (Frank); her grandson, Ryan Gutzmirtl; her sister, Helen Miller; multiple nieces and nephews and many other people who called her "Aunt Ro."

Roberta was well loved; known for her beautiful smile and engaging personality. She was warm and loving to everyone, making new friends everywhere she went.

A Memorial Service for Roberta will be held on Wednesday, January 21st, at Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main Street, Mays Landing, NJ. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the Service starting at noon. A second Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 19th, at 1 p.m., at Christ By The Sea Church, 3755 Highway A1A, Vero Beach, FL.

Memorial contributions in Roberta's name can be made to the Christ By the Sea Endowment Fund at: Give - Christ by the Sea UMC.

Ron and I want to extend our deepest sympathies to Tom, Tommy, and Janet on Roberta's passing. Roberta was one of the most kind and gracious people I have known. I know you will miss her dearly. Wish we could be there for the memorial service but know that we will be thinking of you all.
