Rodger was the youngest son born to Felton C. and Ellen (Holbert) Jones on May 27, 1952, in Lawrence County, Alabama. Rodger graduated from Courtland High School in 1970 with friends who would last a lifetime. He worked as an assistant manager at Ott's Super Valu for several years and never met a stranger. Rodger's love of tinkering with small engines led him to open Jones Mowers & Tillers. As his children grew, Rodger became an active parent volunteer who shared his love for science, technology, engineering, and math with the students and teachers at Hatton Elementary School. Rodger loved to fish, watch the Andy Griffith Show and Gunsmoke, and was a dedicated 4-H volunteer leader. He was recognized by the Alabama Education Association as Parent of the Year (1991), by the Alabama 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association as Volunteer of the Year (1996) and inducted into the Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame (2008). Rodger was a member of Fair Haven Church of Christ, served as a deacon, and led singing as his health allowed.

Jones of Chester, Virginia; son, Dr. Patrick Jones of Hoover; two grandchildren, Mia W. Jones and Wyatt H. Jones; brother Calvin (Gloria) Jones; sisters-in-law, Carol Sue Allen and Patricia Holt; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
