Roger Wilbur Ching (71) passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 1, 2025 in
Watertown, SD.
Roger was born November 12, 1953 in Watertown to Wilbur and Wilma Ching. He was the 3rd oldest of four children. He was educated at Castlewood High school and later went on to Lake Area Tech. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, however his service was deferred when he was called back to work on the family farm. He took great pride working on the farm for his grandfather and eventually his dad. He was a farmer through and through. There was never a shortage of stories from his early days on the farm. Whether it be from milking cows, filling silos, drought years, wet years and also a few good years thrown in the mix. He lived through it all. All you had to do was just ask, and he would tell you.
Roger married Theresa Flemming in 1975 and out of this union they had one daughter named Christy Ching. In 1998, Roger married Linda Hughes - Johnson of Watertown, their union was further blessed with three wonderful children, Rachel (Lucas) Lanning of Watertown, Lucas and Adam Ching of Castlewood.
Roger found his greatest joy in spending time with his family. He loved supporting his children at their sporting events, running the family farm and tending to his garden. He also had a passion for sports, especially cheering on the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, watching Nascar, tuning in to Top Fuel and doing his daily crosswords. He also loved rock n roll music. He was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and an incredible friend. To know Roger was to love him, and his memory will be cherished by all the lives he touched. And we won't forget that incredibly contagious smile.
Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting Roger considered him a friend, as he had a remarkable way of making everyone feel welcomed and valued. Spending time with grandchildren, affectionately known as "Papa" was also one of his greatest joys.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda; his daughters, Christy Ching, Rachel (Lucas) Lanning, his twin sons, Lucas Ching and his fiancé Lexi Wendland, Adam Ching and his special friend Jenny Janish; granddaughters, Zoey Lanning and Oakley Lanning. He is also survived by his three sisters, Cheryl (Jerry) Beckler of Sioux Falls, Jeanne (Wayne) Everson of Sioux Falls, and Jan (Steve) Johnson of Willow Lake; as well as nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Wilma Ching; father and mother-in-law, Arlee and Virginia Johnson.
Roger will be forever remembered for his loving nature, his devotion to family, the simplicity in talking to him and the absolute joy he brought to everyone around him.
