We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Roger Charles Hansen on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the age of 83. Roger is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Edna; his children David, Dyane, Dana, and Katie; his grandchildren Giuliana, Stella, Grace, Harrison, Ethan, and Lea; his mother-in-law Teresa Vargas; and his sons-in-law Joseph Morrione, Patrick Polikowski, and Jeffrey Smolenski.

Roger was born on June 9, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a one-bedroom apartment with his three brothers—Douglas, Ronald, and Richard—and their mother, Dorothy. That $35-a-month apartment held countless memories. Roger’s mother was one of ten siblings, many of whom lived in the same building or nearby, so there was always family around and getting into trouble was never really an option.

Roger was exceptionally athletic. He consistently won the President’s Award for Physical Fitness and was even recognized by some of his heroes from the Brooklyn Dodgers, who visited his school to present him with an award for his physical ability. He especially loved ice hockey and nearly made it into the NHL.

Roger was never afraid of hard work and held many jobs throughout his life. In the 1970s, he was part owner of a clothing factory in New Jersey, where he met his wife, Edna. He was the blue-eyed American boss, and she was the factory worker from Colombia. They fell in love and were married within eight months.

Together, Roger and Edna raised their four children David, Dyane, Dana, and Katie on Long Island. Roger then opened his own general contracting business, RD&R Construction, named after his two brothers, Ronald and Douglas. After retiring from construction, Roger continued working and found a job as a starter at the local golf course. He often joked that it took him 65 years to find his dream job, one that paid $8 an hour BUT included all the free golf he could play.

A true family man, Roger always showed up for his children’s activities and events. He never missed one. Roger was also blessed with six grandchildren. He cherished being a father and grandfather and loved every moment he spent with all of them.

Roger was an honest, simple man who understood what truly mattered in life: family and health. He beat cancer eight years ago and lived each day to the fullest, taking life one day at a time. No matter how difficult things became, he never wavered in doing the right thing and never complained, even through the many health challenges he faced in recent years.

Roger was a God fearing Christian man who loved his country. Roger would proudly show this by wearing a USA polo shirt, a pin, a hat and even went as a far as turning a dead tree into a bald eagle statue on his front lawn. Roger believed deeply in where he was going when his time on earth was over. He is now in heaven with the many loved ones who passed before him and is reunited with his best friend and brother, Ronald.

Roger is already greatly missed by so many. To those who read this, please smile and remember him in your own way likely trying to make you laugh, as he was often lovingly called a “clown” by his wife. Though Roger’s soul has passed on to heaven, he lives on through the wonderful memories he leaves behind.

Not many people get their hero as a father, but his kids and his grandkids were blessed with that gift.
