Roger Hill Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 8, 2023.
Long time collector, author and historian of comic books, Roger Allen Hill, 75 years of age, passed away on December 6th, 2023.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George R. Hill, Marvel Elaine Trefethen; step-father, Robert Trefethen; and brother George D. Hill.

Roger was born in Wichita, Kansas on October 14, 1948, and graduated from Derby Senior High School in 1966. After four years in the Navy, and serving 18 months in Viet Nam during the late 1960s, Roger returned home to friends and family. He was instrumental in organizing and running early comic book conventions in Wichita, both at the old Broadview Hotel, and the Ramada Inn on Kellogg. As an artist, he also supplied advertising art and window display art to local comic shops such as Air Capital Comics and The Shadow's Sanctum. He was also a lifetime member of OAF (The Oklahoma Alliance of Fans) and supported comic conventions in Oklahoma, Texas and throughout the Midwest for many years. He, along with local comic collector Jerry Weist, published the first comic fanzine produced in Wichita called SQUA TRONT. This fanzine was devoted to the stories and art of the EC Entertaining Comics group which was always Roger's collecting interest and focus both in his research and writings. He remained affiliated with SQUA TRONT for over forty years contributing art and articles as needed.

During the early 1990s, Roger worked with Jerry Weist as comic art advisor on the Sotheby's Comic Book and Art auctions in New York City. In 2003, he edited and published his own EC fanzine called EC FAN-ADDICT FANZINE, which ran three issues. His first book titled WALLY WOOD: GALAXY ART AND BEYOND was published in 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Hill and sons, Kevin Hill and Joseph Rudnicki, step-daughter, Nicole Lindeman and family, of Wichita, step-son, Bryce McClintock of Grand Prairie, TX; siblings, Lloydena Wentz of Denton, TX, Lia Brashier of Udall, KS and Ronnie Hill of Wichita; and step-mother, Donna Hill of Wichita. He leaves behind many cousins, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, lots of friends and acquaintances on the EC Facebook page, and others from coast to coast who shared his interests.

A Celebration of Life for Roger will be held at 1PM on Saturday, January 27th, 2024, at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 W. Kellogg, Wichita, Kansas 67209.

I met Roger a few times at a few conventions over the years...did a few art deals with him, and kept in touch with him mostly via email over the years. To my mind, he was one of the few honest people I ever dealt with in the hobby and he was a person of great integrity. One of the greatest historians/experts the comic book/art world has ever had and probably ever will...he contributed so much to it...and as great as he was at that, he was an even greater person and human being. Rest in peace Roger...you never be forgotten and you will always be missed. Lastly, if you see my mother up there, please be sure to let her know that I miss her and love her VERY MUCH...I am my mother's son.

I met Roger in 1970 or 71 at a Comic convention in Oklahoma . One of the nicest people you´ll ever meet, he was one of the people who made me love comics through his work on Squa Tront and later as my favorite comic biographer and I spent the rest of my life working in the comic field, as a retailer. So lucky to have met him long ago.

I only met Roger briefly one time, at a San Diego con. He was very nice, and helpful to me in my own comic book research. I enjoyed our email chats, also. My condolences to his family and friends. He was a nice man.

I miss my friend Roger Hill. After nearly forty years of friendship, he is gone. Roger was a decent man and a huge influence on me in collecting and writing about original comic art. Being part of his CFA-APA publication since 1985 was truly an honor. His advice and guidance throughout my membership and tenure as editor was invaluable. Spending time with him during a variety of comic conventions and CFA-APA parties is a cherished memory. Sharing the Jack Kamen dinner table during the 2000 EC Reunion is etched in my heart. Being on stage with him at the EC Fan-Addicts Club panel during the 2017 San Diego Comic was the last time I saw him in person and I had hoped to see him again. He was always willing to share is knowledge and although he was quite sick, earlier this year helped me with some EC related information. Roger will be missed by so many of us that he knew and helped over the years. His memory will live on through his thoughtful gestures and historical writings.

Roger hill was my grandpa and I always loved spending the night with him and my grandma. He has a great collection of old movies like star wars and the thing that led to me having such an appreciation for film and his comics I think got me into reading so much as a kid. Roger was always kind and lit up a room with his smile. I can count on less then 5 fingers the amount of times he ever got really mad.
I will truly miss Roger.

I only met Roger 6 or 7 years ago at OAF and he was the nicest person! We soon figured out that while he was in the Navy during Vietnam, I was a teenager living in Yokosuka Japan. One of our last visits was after a long day at OAF. We sat up way too long swapping stories of his navy time and my stories of running around Japan trying to find comics at all the different bases. We never got to tell all the stories. I'll miss him.

I first met Roger in the early 1970s. I was just starting out collecting Marvel. DC comics and others. Roger showed me the amazing artists from EC comics and I became a lifelong fan. Roger remained a friend, and had the honor of helping him with his Reed Crandall biography, scanning most of the comics for the book. He also had me do scans for his Wally Wood Galaxy book. His breath and depth of knowledge of comic artists was unparalleled. He tracked down numerous artists and in most cases was the only one to ever interview them about their comic work. A real historical treasure trove of information the Golden Age of comics and their artists and creators. Roger i'm proud to have known you. God bless. Jeff Kilian
