1940 – 2026
The Reverend Monsignor Roger A. Lechner, a devoted priest, died March 11, 2026 at the age of 85 in Bonsall, CA. Father Roger was born on July 2, 1940 in Brawley, CA to George A. and Anna Catherine (Walters) Lechner. He attended Sacred Heart in Brawley, St. Joseph’s in Holtville, and graduated from Central Union High School in El Centro in 1958. This was followed by 8 years in St. Francis Seminary at USD in San Diego.
Fr. Roger ministered at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, St. Francis in Vista, St. Stephan’s, which he founded, in Valley Center, Resurrection in Escondido, and concluded his pastorate at Holy Spirit, where he served 23 years. He also worked as Vice-Chancellor for several Bishops.
Throughout his ministry, he was a mentor to many. He started the Sparkplugs, a special youth group program. Fr. Roger also was a State-Certified Foster Father to several young people.
He had an adventurous spirit and provided the Sparkplugs, his foster children, and others with diverse experiences which included memorable destinations and cultural appreciation. His travels and extended education included Vietnam, Oxford and the Vatican.
Fr. Roger was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, George Joseph Lechner. He is survived by his sister-in-law Diane, twin brother Roy (Barb), sister Georganne, brothers John (Mary Jean), Rob (Judy), and Paul. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and beloved foster families. He was lovingly cared for by his foster son, Nick Gomez and wife Trina, who shared their home with him for the past 8 years.
Services will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2725 55th St. San Diego on March 30, Rosary and Vigil at 5 pm and March 31, Mass at 10 am. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Private burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
