Roger Howard Matern (82) of Bountiful, Utah passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 12, 2023. Roger was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 1, 1941, to William Matern and Mildred Anna Sophia Spieker Matern. He was sixth of six children.
Roger is survived by his loving wife Linda Forsberg Matern of 63 years; his children Mitch (Lorie) of Kaysville, Ut., Lori Arntz (John) of Bountiful, Ut., and Bill Matern of Layton, Ut.; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, brother Earl Matern of Layton, Ut. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Roger graduated from Bountiful High School. It was there that he met the love of his life Linda Forsberg. They fell in love and were married July 24, 1960. In April of 1971 they were sealed together with their children as an eternal family in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Bountiful.
Roger learned the meaning of hard work at a very young age as the family owned a farm/orchard which took much of his time.
Roger attended Utah Technical College and became a very successful Machinist. He later joined the union and served a four year apprenticeship to become a heavy duty mechanic on the line crew at Wasatch Electric. He was always sharing his talents and abilities with others.
Roger loved spending time with his family and sharing stories of his life. He loved and was proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved sitting by a camp fire with his family cooking a hot dog and enjoying family time.
Roger loved fishing a Yellowstone Lake, boating, camping in the Uintah’s, Moab jeep safari, racing his Banshee at Little Sahara, building and restoring cars/trucks, which he was very gifted with. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix and repair.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, November 20, 2023 at the Val Verda 4th Ward Chapel, 2633 South 50 West, Bountiful. A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful and Monday morning 10:00 - 11:15 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment - Bountiful City Cemetery.
Services will be streamed live on the Russon Mortuary & Crematory Facebook page and on this obituary page. The live stream will begin about 10-15 minutes prior to the service and will be posted below.
