Roger Dean Nelson of Dawson died Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Johnson Memorial Hospital at the age of 76.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday December 29, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson with Pastor Kendall Stelter officiating.
Visitation will be held for one hour before the service. Arrangements are with Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson.
Roger was born in Sanborn, Iowa on November 27, 1946 and was raised in Jasper, Minnesota with his father and mother, Andy and Cleona Nelson. He grew up on his father's farm until he joined the Navy in December of 1963. He served on the USS Sioux during Vietnam where he earned a Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal.
Roger married the love of his life Carol (Kuehl) Nelson in Verdi, Minnesota on May 14, 1966. They began their life together in San Diego, California and Roger's work took them all across the United States until settling in Dawson in 1985. Roger worked for Cliff Viessman's Inc for many years.
Roger loved to be outdoors. He shared his love for camping, hunting, and fishing with his sons: Mike, Travis and Scott. Roger enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Roger never met a stranger as he was able to make everyone feel like a long-time friend.
Roger was preceded in death by his wife Carol, his parents, his brother Dick, and two sisters Marilyn and Regina.
He is survived by his sons; Mike (Kate) Nelson, Reno NV, Travis (Marlene) Nelson, Colton SD, Scott (Diana) Nelson, Tipp City OH; grandchildren: Christopher (Christen) Nelson, Leanna (Joe) Walton, Leah (Justin) Miller, Cassie (Austin McGuire) Nelson, Ty Nelson, Shelby (David) Westmeyer, Nick Nelson, Justin (Kylee) Nelson, Zachery Nelson: 7 great-grandchildren: Logan, Gabby, Isla, Roger, Emma, Gracyson, and Calvin; as well as extended family and friends.
The family would like to thank Ann and Sam with Avera Hospice for taking excellent care of Roger as well as the nursing staff at Johnson Memorial Hospital – Care Center.
