Roger Vernon Pieske, son of Merritt and Elvira (Mude) Pieske, was born on March 1, 1946, in Springfield, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Faith Lutheran Church, formerly Peace Lutheran Church, in Morris, Minnesota. Roger attended the Cyrus School District, and graduated from Cyrus High School in 1964. After high school, he continued his education at the Wahpeton State School of Science and Technology, earning his Associates Degree in Diesel Mechanics. Roger and Janice Graves were united in marriage in 1966, and welcomed two children: Paula and Greg. Roger’s career included: Bill Dripps’ Garage in Morris, the Cyrus Farmers Elevator Company in Cyrus, and lastly, farming with his dad and brother on the family farm.
It would be an understatement to say that Roger was an active volunteer and leader in the community that he loved so much! He volunteered with the Pope County Pheasant Restoration, the Cyrus Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief for more than 20 years, was a member of the Cyrus City Council from 1977 to 1986, and Mayor of Cyrus from 1986 to 2018. For many years, Roger managed a slow-pitch softball team and also coached the Cyrus Babe Ruth Baseball team. When time allowed, his hobbies included: owning stock cars, fishing and spearing, deer hunting, watching Nascar and playing golf and snowmobiling. Roger enjoyed playing cards, especially Rook and Buck Euchre. He could often be found on fishing trips to Canada with family and friends, but Roger’s ultimate past time was traveling to watch the grandkids play sports - everything from volleyball, baseball, basketball and football.
Roger died on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the West Wind Village in Morris, MN. He was 77 years old.
Roger is survived by his wife, Jan Pieske; two children: Paula (Tony) Amborn of Thompson, ND, and Greg (Caryn) Pieske of Big Lake; two grandchildren: McKenna Amborn, and Braeden Amborn; brother, Dennis (Andrea) Pieske of Willmar; brother-in-law, Richard (Mary) Graves of Bernalillo, NM; three nieces: Emily (Xavier Ortiz) Graves, Eleanor (Bob Town) Graves, and Staci (Matt) Butler; two nephews: Andrew (Oriana Sandoval) Graves, and Nathan (Stephanie) Pieske; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Merritt and Elvira Pieske.
