Roger Lynn Rogers, a longtime resident of Candler, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

Roger was born on November 7, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Saint Elmo Rogers and Catherine Beatrice Lechner. Over the years he also made his home in Austin, Texas, before eventually settling in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

Affectionately known by many as “Gunny Rog,” Roger proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (E-6). During his distinguished military career, he was stationed at several Marine Corps installations including Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Camp Lejeune, Camp Butler in Okinawa, Japan, and Camp Pendleton, and he served honorably during the Vietnam War. In recognition of his dedication and service, Roger received several commendations and honors, including a Meritorious Promotion, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Navy Unit Commendation. His years of service reflected a deep commitment to duty, leadership, and country.

Following his military service, Roger spent forty-five years working in the automotive industry. Throughout his career he was employed with Town North Nissan, Leif Johnson Ford, and Charles Maund Oldsmobile, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication.

Roger found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time outdoors gardening, feeding birds and wildlife, golfing, lending a helping hand to others, and most of all, spending time with his beloved family.

Roger met the love of his life, Ingrid, at a young age, and the two were married on August 7, 1970. Their marriage was one of devotion, partnership, and deep love. Roger lovingly embraced and adopted Ingrid’s three children, raising them as his own. Together, Roger and Ingrid built a life centered around family, sharing in the joy of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ingrid will especially miss Roger’s quiet daily gestures of love, including the cherished routine of him preparing her morning coffee.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Ingrid Rogers; his sons Larry J. Rogers of Austin, Texas, David Rogers, Roger Rogers II, and Matthew Rogers of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his daughter Anita Pollock of Palm Bay, Florida; and his brother Robert Rogers of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Matthew Rogers, Heather Delahoussaye, Nathan Rogers, Patrick Pollock, Krista Dunn, Lyne’ Clarke, Megan Rogers, Brianna Rogers, Katherine Kaska, and Kyle Rogers, along with many great-grandchildren who brought him great pride and happiness.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Dawn D. Cheshier.

Roger will be remembered for his honorable service to his country, his devotion to his family, and the kindness and generosity he shared with those around him. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
