Roger Dale Russell, a beloved member of the Haskell community, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the age of 55. Born on December 25, 1968, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Roger lived a life marked by his extraordinary kindness and boundless enthusiasm for connecting with others.
Roger grew up in Haskell, Oklahoma, where he attended elementary school before graduating from Boynton High School in 1987 and furthered his education at the Indian Capital Technology Center in Muskogee, Oklahoma, after graduation.
For most of his life, Roger lived with his parents, Lucile and Jerry Morgan, until he moved to Woodlands Skilled Nursing about a year ago. At Woodlands, Roger's warmth and friendliness made him a cherished resident, with a steady stream of visitors who came to offer their care and companionship.
Roger had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel like a friend. He approached life with an open heart, always seeing the best in people even when other couldn't. His genuine interest in others made him a favorite at church gatherings, where he would move from person to person, checking in and sharing in their lives. He was equally at home striking up conversations in Walmart, savoring the stories of those he met, which would make the trip take forever. He loved spreading joy through his phone calls. His friends often turned these calls into a game, seeing how long they could keep him on the line before he reached out to the next person. Roger's genuine care and curiosity for others were unmatched. He delighted in hearing people's life stories and found joy vicariously living their experiences.
Roger's interests were as diverse as his friendships. He enjoyed playing video games, watching WWE Wrestling, and spending time with his nieces and nephews. He delighted in riding his bike when he was able, and his favorite pastimes included indulging in cheeseburgers and Coke. Roger held a special fondness for the 4th of July and Christmas, the latter being both a celebration and his birthday.
Roger was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gene and Ethel Russell. He is survived by his mother, Lucille Morgan, and step-father Jerry Morgan; his sister Christy and her husband Bryan Ward; his niece Ashley and her husband Kyle Mustin; and his four great-nieces and great-nephews: Cali, Chloe, Brantley, and Cooper. He also leaves behind many cousins and hundreds of friends who will miss his warm spirit.
A Celebration of Roger's Life will be held at the Haskell Free Will Baptist Church, 500 W Skelly Rd, Haskell, OK 74436, on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at 3:00 PM.
