Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sullivan's Funeral Home - Horseheads on Feb. 6, 2026.
Roger Raymond Smith, a man of unwavering integrity, boundless kindness and true character, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 30, 2026 at the age of 82 in Erin, NY. Known for his gentle spirit, dedication to family and love for the outdoors, he was born on June 19, 1943, son of the late Raymond and Betty Forsythe Smith.

His legacy lives on through his beloved wife Sharon Crawford Smith, with whom just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 31,2025. Roger is also survived by his children; Jennifer Smith Brink and Roger (Michelle) Smith; grandchildren, Stephanie (Phil), Steven Brink, Louis (Kim) Brink, Ryan (Reiné) Brink, Allen (Lia) Brink and Chelsea Smith; great-grandchildren, Aaron and Evelyn; brothers, Ray (Pat) Smith, Jack (Sharon) Smith and Jerry (Karen) Smith; sister in-laws; Shirley Berry and Laura Leone; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his brother, Richard Leone; nephew, Rick Leone;

brother-in-law, Carl Berry and his beloved grandson, Jacob Smith.

Roger proudly served his country in the United States Army. He held immense pride in his career working for Hardinge Brothers, retiring after 50 dedicated years. Throughout his career, Roger achieved many professional accomplishments which included nine patents and was the lead mechanical engineer on The Conquest Project. The Conquest Machine is used world wide and changed the machinist world. Roger was known for his superior intelligence, fairness, mentorship and provided inspiration to countless individuals.

He volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts of America and Erin Senior Citizens Center, served as the caretaker of the Scotchtown Cemetery in Erin, NY, and was an active member of Horseheads Moose Lodge #1476 and American Legion Post 442 for 50 years.

Roger was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, making maple syrup and spending time with his brothers. In his leisure time, he found great joy in working on his tractors and fishing with his granddaughter Chelsea. He found great happiness in the time he shared with his grandsons. He was never more happier than when surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Sharing a beer, a laugh and a good story. He was known for his selflessness and always willing to lend a helping hand. He brought light and warmth to everyone around him. His lessons on family and hard work will continue to guide us. He leaves behind a void that can never be filled, but a heart full of memories that will never fade.

The family welcomes your condolences at this time. Roger's wishes are that services will be held privately with military honors. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
