Roger Spindler Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Farewell - Page Funeral Chapel on Jan. 18, 2025.
Roger Spindler, a devoted husband, father, and Vietnam War veteran, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. He was 76 years old. Roger faced adversity early in life, overcoming polio at just four years old. Tragically, he lost his mother to cancer at the tender age of 10, but he continued to demonstrate strength and resilience throughout his life. A proud graduate with a Bachelor's degree, Roger served in the United States Navy, where he was stationed aboard the USS Enterprise as a Gunners Mate and later oversaw the mechanics of the ship's missile launcher. Roger's sharp intellect was legendary. He could tackle a New York Times crossword puzzle with ease and was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge, particularly when it came to Jeopardy! He had a passion for learning and a sharp wit that made him the life of any conversation.
He was also known for his love of sports, especially football. As a young man, he formed lasting memories on the football field, including an infamous moment when he and his teammates burned a cross onto the grass-an act he would later reflect on as an important part of his growing sense of responsibility. In addition to his military service and intellectual pursuits, Roger had a deep love for the simple joys in life. He was an avid fan of classic black-and-white films, particularly those by director John Ford, and had a particular fondness for Westerns. His passion for bird watching began at a young age as a Junior Bird Watcher, and he carried it with him throughout his life. But perhaps his greatest joy was his beloved wife, Sandy. The two met at Zapp's Park, a meeting that would forever change both of their lives. Their love and partnership were a source of strength and happiness for Roger throughout his life. Together, they shared many memories and sharing their passions for camping, crosswords, scrabble and good conversation.
Roger is survived by his loving wife Sandy, siblings Ben, Francie, MaryLynn, Jim, nephew Mathew, stepdaughter Melanie, stepson John and numerous extended grandchildren and extended family. He will be remembered for his intelligence, wit, loyalty, and unwavering love for those closest to him. His life, though full of challenges, was marked by courage, kindness, and an enduring sense of humor. Roger's family would like to thank the many friends, caregivers, and medical professionals who supported him during his battle with cancer. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
