I worked with Dr Nyegaard at DMC and went to Guatemala with him and the Volunteers in Action group. He was the family doctor tommany of my friends in Escalon where he initially set up practice. Everyone loved him. He was a compassionate and competent physician who had the respect of everyone. To a life well lived. You are missed.

Yesterday
My interactions with Dr Nyegaard were brief...but profound.
Our lives intersected with a life changing force we both shared in common.
On Fridays after a long week I would routinely visit Evelyn Hanshaw. The retired Masterpieces English Teacher and Modesto City School Curriculum Director would read me poetry and elevate my appreciation for the poetic canon and keep her love of prose alive.
On occasion she would rest her book on her lap as if some sonnet swept her back to her old classroom at Modesto High School (1944-1954).
Evelyn would reminisce with a smile pulling up memories of her interactions with her pupils.
Dr Roland Nyegaard was a standout.
Evelyn had the gift of seeing potential more than anyone. She was an important influencer nudging Dr. Nyegaard on his path to UC Berkeley providing Roland with an alum's advice, including suitcases and all.
It is entirely clear Dr Nyegaard never forgot the help he got along the way and gave back, and back, and back.
Evelyn was passing away at Memorial Hospital in December, 2005. The last time I saw Dr. Nygaard was when I entered Evelyn´s room early one morning and Dr Nygaard was sleeping in a chair next to her bed.
That moment embodies all the eloquent descriptions contained in Dr Nygaard´s obituary.

Roland was always a pleasure to work with- I met him working at Modesto City Hospital in the ER when I first moved to Modesto and much later would see he and Kate at FUMC. We would also run into the them time to time at the Gallo or lab. Truly a wonderful person and very dedicated to Kate

He was our family doctor for years and was such a kind and caring man. He even visited my husband and me when I was at Stanford for treatment. I´ve never forgotten how much that meant to us.

I'm so sorry to hear about Roland's passing. I didn't know him well or long, but every time he was there at our Board meetings I got a sense of warmth, energy and joy from his liveliness and laughter. What a wonderful soul. I'm so thankful I got to meet him and even those brief moments are so vivid.

Querida Kate

Roland was our ski buddy and he could usually stay up later than any of us. We became more involved with Planned Parenthood because of him. The time we spent with him is a memory we shall never forget. Thank you Kate for sharing him.

I´m heartbroken to hear of Doctors passing. I had the pleasure of being he patient at Family Health Care. He also counseled on some on my medical issues. He was so kind, always happy to see me, as if we were close friends not just doctor and patient. If I saw him at the hospital he would always look me in the eyes and say hello.
Thank you Dr Roland and Kate for supporting The Gallo Center for the Arts!!! I love it there my brother and nice play with bands there from Valley Music Institute.
Dr Ronald will be missed!!

I worked with him. When he heard me talk, he teased me about my accent, " Minnesota". I had the utmost respect for him. It is sad there are not more like him today. God Bless him and his family always.

Oh, Dr Nyegaard, what a gift you were to everyone that was lucky enough to cross paths with you!!! I knew Dr Nyegaard first as my primary care doctor, later as a colleague at both Doctors Medical Center and Modesto Jr College, and forever as a friend. I will cherish the memories I have of working with him, as well as the many conversations we shared. I will miss him immensely!
