Ron Rowenhorst, beloved father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and chosen family to many, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2024, at age 71, surrounded by family.
A Celebration of Life will be at Heritage Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. with fellowship and food to follow. Family will be present one hour before the service. Burial will take place Spring 2024 at Rosehill Cemetery in Parker, SD.
Ron was born April 3, 1952 and raised on the family farm near Marion, SD. He attended District 12 Country School, and graduated from Marion High School in 1970. He later married and had children, and spent several years farming and helping on the family farm.
For a period of about 37 years, Ron worked for Sweetman Construction, now Knife River, where he drove all types of trucks. Driving became a part of who he was. Even when his mind was failing him, he still loved to talk about work, and remembered fondly, the job and the people he had worked with. After retirement, driving was still his favorite entertainment. He would drive to get somewhere, but also just for the journey. He would sometimes just cruise the countryside, sometimes drive hours to buy the perfect watermelons for his children and grandchildren, and greatly enjoyed driving to the Black Hills, where his siblings would gather often at Jim and Barb’s house.
Ron enjoyed hobbies over the years including woodworking and gardening, and in recent years, he enjoyed learning to fly drones with his brother Jim. His favorite annual activity for 25+ years was attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. He rode a motorcycle for years, and then transitioned to a trike. For a couple of years, Ron was president of the Brothers of the Third Wheel East River Chapter, an organization for trike riders.
Ron is survived by his three children, Faith Boll, Josh Rowenhorst (Jenny), and Charity Dupuy (Les) all of Sioux Falls, SD, step-daughter Mindy Loewen of Schenectady, New York, his brother Jim Rowenhorst (Barb) of Rapid City, SD, and his sister Karen Bence (David) of Denver, North Carolina, 10 grandchildren, and 9 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Nikki, parents Harold and Ferne, older brother Eugene, and granddaughter Anslee.
In memory of Ron, please direct memorials to your local food bank, as this was a cause he was passionate about.
Ron’s family would like to extend their appreciation to Avera Home Hospice for the exceptional care they provided both to Ron, and to the family, throughout the end of life process.
