Ronald Barnet Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sinai Mortuary of AZ on Jan. 3, 2026.
In the gentle embrace of the desert sunset, Dr. Ronald "Ron" Barnet, a beacon of healing and philanthropy, completed his earthly journey on January 1, 2026, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Born on April 26, 1938, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Ron's passage through this world has left indelible marks of love, wisdom, and joy on all he encountered.
The story of Dr. Barnet's life is one of dedication and service. A proud alumnus of Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine, Ron was a man whose hands were blessed with the ability to heal. Serving as a doctor in the Navy during the Vietnam War, he revealed his deep commitment to his comrades and the medical oath as he performed life-saving surgery amidst the turmoil of battle. Ron returned from service adorned with the National Defence Service Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation, a Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal-a testament not just to his bravery, but to his profound medical expertise.
Upon returning to Phoenix, and with the valor of his service years etched into his soul, Ron began working with his father in medical practice. But soon, his vision and pioneering spirit led him to establish his own practice in Ophthalmology. His name became synonymous with innovation, particularly in the realm of cataract surgery, where his expertise in phacoemulsification and intraocular lenses advanced the field and brought sight to many. His legacy in medicine continued to grow with the founding of the Barnet Center of Ophthalmology, a network of surgery and ophthalmology centers that remain beacons of hope for individuals experiencing vision problems.
In tandem with his accomplished medical career, Ron's partnership with his beloved wife, Teri Barnet, who predeceased him, flourished into a commitment to civic leadership. Together, they generously offered their time and resources to enrich their community through organizations like Hospice of the Valley, The Phoenix Symphony, and the Phoenix Art Museum, embodying the spirit of 'tikkun olam'-the Jewish principle of repairing the world.
Dr. Barnet's life was a rich tapestry woven with threads of his diverse interests. An ardent music and opera aficionado, Ron found solace and inspiration in the crescendos and cadences that resonate within the human spirit. His youthful endeavors as a swimmer transitioned into his enjoyment of tennis and golf, and as the seasons of his life changed, he discovered a new passion in the intricate strategy of Mah Jong, where he connected with fellow enthusiasts and sharpened his mind.
Dr. Ronald Barnet's story continues in every life he has touched, in every vision restored, and in every heart he has inspired to serve humanity with boundless love and relentless pursuit of excellence. He is survived by his loving daughter Susan and his brother-in-law Steven Bensal.
As we commemorate Dr. Barnet's passage from this world, let his memory be a blessing-a 'zichrono livracha'-and an enduring source of inspiration to all.

I had the good fortune to do my residency and work with Dr Barnet in the early 90s. He was a mentor I deeply admired, not only for his remarkable work, but for his kindness, patience and passion of ophthalmology.

Please accept my deepest condolences. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.

With respect and sympathy,
Mary Fisher

I was a clinical / surgical technician and was part of Dr. Barnet's cataract surgery team from 1988 - 1991. I became a Certified Ophthalmic Technician while working at The Barnet Center Of Ophthalmology. The main office was at 3333 E. Camelback Rd., with office / clinic / surgery centers in Mesa and Sun City. I was part of the his traveling team in his innovative vision to charter air travel twice monthly to Safford, AZ, Cottonwood, AZ, and Sedona, AZ to perform cataract surgery on patients in those cities where he began a successful networking partnership with optometrists -- which was at that time a new approach to go to locations and perform cataract surgeries there, rather than have patients travel long distances to the nearest surgery center for their surgery and follow-up care. It was an honor for me to work very closely with Dr. Barnet and we became good friends. I am saddened to learn of his passing, and I attest to his lasting impact he had in my life. To this day, I still often recall his wisdom, advice, compassion, empathy, generosity, and a brilliant smile and lovely sense of humor. My condolences to you all.
