Ronald Denny Chavis, affectionately known as "Ronnie," was born on November 15, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, and peacefully passed away on October 18, 2025, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, surrounded by loved ones. He departed this life with dignity and grace, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of strength, wisdom, and unwavering love.

Raised in Akron, Ronnie was deeply influenced by his stepfather, David "Pops" Williams, whose guidance helped shape him into the hardworking, compassionate, and principled man he became. After attending the University of Akron, where he studied Construction Management, Ronnie briefly worked at Chrysler before boldly embracing entrepreneurship. He went on to establish his own excavating and construction businesses, completing numerous projects throughout Akron and Northeast Ohio. His commitment to quality, integrity, and perseverance earned him the respect of colleagues, clients, and community members alike.

A man of intellect and curiosity, Ronnie possessed a remarkable vocabulary and a profound appreciation for knowledge. Gifted in math and science, he valued education, discipline, and self-improvement, often challenging the people around him to broaden their minds and strive for excellence. These values were reflected in the lessons he passed down to his children and to the many young people he mentored.

Health and vitality were central to Ronnie's life. He enjoyed wholesome foods-especially fruit-and encouraged his family to embrace healthier habits. He often introduced his sons to natural products like wheat germ oil, which, despite their frowns, showed his deep care for their well-being. Ronnie remained active well into his later years. He was an avid basketball player and a proud member of the Akron Old Timers league, sharing the court with greats such as Gus Johnson, P.J. Johnson, and "Stormin' Norman" Curry. He also enjoyed running and completed several Cleveland half marathons. Whether on the basketball court or the construction site, Ronnie approached life with energy, resolve, and an indomitable spirit.

A devoted father and mentor, Ronnie took immense pride in instilling in his sons the values of hard work, endurance, confidence, and perseverance. His mentorship extended far beyond his home, as he guided neighborhood youth with kindness, patience, and encouragement-touching countless lives and shaping future generations.

In his later years, Ronnie relocated to Philadelphia, where he continued to live a full and meaningful life surrounded by family. He often shared words of inspiration, including one of his favorite sayings: "Keep your head to the sky. It only gets better with time." He lived by the motto "Never say die," and those who knew him will forever carry his wisdom, laughter, and love in their hearts.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Beaulah Lee Chavis; father, Ollie Chavis; stepfather, David "Pops" Williams; and brother, Lawrence David Chavis Sr.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his sister, Katherine Chavis of Philadelphia, PA; brother, Leonard (Yolanda) Williams of Philadelphia, PA; sons, Marcus Miller of Akron, OH, Carlos Leon Chavis Sr. (Keba) of Lorain, OH, and Henry Sweet of Akron, OH; grandchildren, Jade Chavis, Carlos Leon Chavis Jr., and Savon Chavis; great-grandchild, Carlos Leon Chavis III ("C3"); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.

Ronnie's light, strength, and spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his family and friends look forward to the day they will see him again in the promised resurrection.

Memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at 12:00 noon at Sommerville Funeral Services, 1695 Diagonal Rd. Akron, Oh 44320.
