Ronald Davis Obituary

Ronald Clarence Davis was born on January 6, 1954 to Elizabeth (Liz) Mae and Charles Henry Davis in Appalachia, Va. Liz subsequently remarried and Ron had a close and loving relationship with his step-father, Harry Ernest Stuart. Ron is survived by his wife, Thora (Colden) Davis; two daughters, Alicia Rene, and Lenea Joy; five brothers, Paul Davis, Walter Stuart, Harry Stuart, Robert Stuart, and Michael Price (honorary); three sisters, Valerie Coates, Lynnette Stuart, and Jocelyn Stuart; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Nicknamed "Flash" for his athletic talent, Davis helped lead Appalachia High School to the Group A state football and basketball titles his senior year. Davis went on to play football at Virginia Tech and then attend training camp with the Denver Broncos.

Ron was Prince William County's first Black high school head football coach when Woodbridge hired him for that position in 1988. In 13 seasons leading the Vikings, he went 89-53 and reached the playoffs eight times. He also spent 11 seasons as the Vikings' head girls' basketball coach, winning 20 or more games four times and qualifying for the state semifinals three times. Ron, who coached track at Woodbridge from 1979-83 as well, is a member of the school's athletic hall of fame.

Services for Ron will be on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at All Saints' Church, 14851 Gideon Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22192. A visitation will be held from 11 am to 12 pm and the funeral service will begin promptly at 12 pm. Ron will be laid to rest at Fairfax Memorial Park at a private committal service.

The family would like memorial donations to go to either SOMA (3900 Morris Lane, Arlington, TX 76016 or New Wineskins) or New Wineskins Missionary Network (5572 Garden Village Way #18, Greensboro, NC 27410).

I apologize for learning about and responding so late to Flash´s passing. I am from Gate City, VA and I my dad, Harry Fry had such great respect for Appalachia and Flash´s talent. I got to follow him in playing at Va Tech. Not only was he a great FB player (I have never seen any DB hit opposing players so hard) he was a remarkable person. You should be well pleased of the inspiration he passed on to those of us who followed him as a VA Tech Hokie. Please accept my deepest sympathies in your family´s loss. Keener Fry

I was a teammate of Flash @ VT in 1975 Fall ! He was a first class human being with a wonderful smile and demeanor. Until he hit you on the football field , his physicalities were beyond exceptional in football and basketball . I was a first year player at VT his senior season , I was able to spend time with on and off the football field because we were both DBs ! He was a special person and I have thought of him often over the years . His hits on the football field were legendary!
He will be elevated to first team in heaven without a doubt ! Flash Davis a life well lived my Hokie Brother !

I remember watching Flash play football. He was a flash for sure. Those were the days. Paul Davis, you are one of my fondest memories of AHS. And Walt, I remember your cute shy smile. The best of memories. So sorry for your loss. Hugs and prayers during this difficult time.

A lot of great memories playing basketball for Coach Davis. I remember him fondly and appreciate the discipline and work ethic he instilled in me at such a young age. May he rest in peace.

Graduated from Appalachia High School with Ron. Sat next to him in English class. Always had the utmost respect for him. He was just a great person. I am so glad I got to see him again at our 50th reunion this past October. So sad he is gone, but I´ll see him again someday.... My sympathy to Thora and all his family.
