Ronald Garbez Obituary
Published by Legacy on Oct. 9, 2024.
Ronald Keith Garbez, lifelong resident of the North Fair Oaks neighborhood, passed away at his home on Friday, August 16th. He was 67.
Ron was born on February 28, 1957 at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City. He attended Garfield Elementary, Hoover Middle School, and Menlo Atherton High School where he excelled academically, and became a fixture in the trumpet section of school bands. During his teen years, his appreciation for well-crafted films, intriguing novels and big band jazz soared.
Once in the workforce, he joined Raychem Corporation and found a career path that placed him in a variety of manufacturing and research roles. He remained at Raychem, and later Tyco Corporation, through myriad changes, for over 35 years.
In 2021, Ron received a double lung transplant at Stanford Hospital, which extended his life by three years. He was deeply thankful for his days following the surgery, was a disciplined patient, and lived comfortably until his passing
Ron had an exceptionally good mind, and was always willing to discuss, and debate, current events, politics, films, music, and books. He was a voracious reader and film buff with eclectic taste, and held an appreciation for nearly every genre known. Though not overtly argumentative, Ron was never shy to voice his opinion, especially on topics he felt strongly about. He was articulate without being wordy. He energized conversations by expressing himself with intelligence, humor, and gusto. And his many friends loved him for it.
Ron's love of family was reflected in his devotion to his mother, Glenda, and younger brother Randy, both of whom have since passed. His bond with Randy was particularly strong, as much as a father figure as an older brother. Apart from a year or two, they lived under the same roof for their entire lives. He understood friendship, how to cultivate and sustain it, which is evidenced by strong ties to childhood friends that date back to his earliest school days.
His lifestyle reflected his wide-ranging interests and tastes. He loved classic cars and trucks, and owned an impressive array. He collected models, toys, and memorabilia, again reflecting his range of appreciation. He was an outstanding cook and had a profound skill for slow-cooked or smoked beef and pork. Super Bowl parties were always best with beef provided by Ron, especially when his beloved 49ers were involved.
Ron Garbez leaves us with an amazing legacy. His appreciation for all things in life, his deep supply of love and support for friends and family, his intellect, are all attributes we would love to have in similar abundance. And with Ron they were all seen in one person. He will be remembered with love, forever.
