Ronald Gray Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fisher Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services - Logansport on Mar. 29, 2025.
Ronald James "Jim" Gray, 88, of Logansport, Indiana, peacefully passed away at the Indiana Veterans Home on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
Born on August 8, 1936, in Logansport, Jim was the beloved son of Mary E. Daggett, who preceded him in death.
A graduate of Logansport High School, Class of 1954, Jim continued his education at Ball State University, where he earned an Associate of Arts and Science degree.
On November 7, 1975, Jim married the love of his life, Mali Kumsarmpon, in Korat City, Thailand. Mali passed away on September 2, 1984.
Jim dedicated much of his life to service in the United States military. In 1953, he joined the Indiana National Guard, earning the Expert Rifleman's Badge at Camp Atterbury just two weeks later. In 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served during the Vietnam War. Jim was an aircrew member, initially serving as a door gunner on "Huey" helicopters With the 5th Special Forces, conducting secret long-range reconnaissance patrols into Cambodia. He later became an aerial gunner on AC-130 Spectre gunships with the 16th Special Operations Squadron, "Ghost Riders." Throughout his distinguished military career, Jim participated in many key operations, including the evacuation of Phnom Penh, the rescue of the S.S. Mayaguez, and the near evacuation of Luang Prabang, Laos. His service was decorated with numerous honors, including four Distinguished Flying Crosses, 13 Air Medals, two Meritorious Service Medals, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Jim retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1983, achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
Beyond his military service, Jim was a devoted family man, cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed target shooting, fly fishing, reading mystery novels, and immersing himself in military history. Most of all, he treasured spending time with his daughter, Jill, and loved creating lasting memories with his family.
Jim was a 55-year member of the Walton American Legion Post 418 and a life member of the Logansport VFW Post 3790. He was immensely proud of his service to his country. Jim is survived by his daughter, Jillian W. Gray; two daughters, Cheyelle Martin and Bernadette Gray, several grandchildren, and great grandchildren of Norfolk, England; two grandsons, Caleb McLochlin of Houston, TX, and Denver McLochlin (Elana), along with his great-granddaughter, Olivia McLochlin, of Lafayette, IN.
A private graveside service with full military honors will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery.
