Ronald Jay Holmes, 85, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2022, at the Season's Assisted Living facility in Farr West, Utah. He was born in Ogden, Utah on September 21, 1937, to loving parents, Orville Glen and Eleanor Leila Holmes. His family lived in Liberty, Utah and when he was a small boy they moved to Marriott, Utah, where he resided until his death.
Ron developed a strong work ethic at a very young age as he and his brothers would rise early to haul hay for his dad. He milked cows with his grandpa, thinned beets and worked in the tomato and pea patches. His family always had a horse as well as pigs, chickens, milk cows and rabbits. There wasn't much time for recreation but when there was, they had their baseball gloves ready to play catch or try to fit in a game.
Ron attended Wahlquist School in Ogden, Utah from Kindergarten through 9th grade. Most mornings he would work before school and return to work after school. He attended Weber High School, graduating in 1955.
Ron said, "one of the highlights of my life was playing ball." He played shortstop and 3rd base with some playing time as a pitcher. He played in the Farm Bureau League in Ogden, Utah as well as a player at Weber High School. He was drafted out of high school to play baseball for the Chicago Cubs but chose to get married instead of joining the Chicago Cubs farm system.
Ron married his sweetheart, Dixie Lee Dearden on June 7, 1957, in the Logan LDS Temple. They were blessed with 1 daughter (Kim) and 3 sons (Mick, Wade and Scott).
Ron was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served in many positions and callings. He served as a member of the Marriott Ward Bishopric, Marriott Ward Sunday School President, High Councilor, Stake Athletic Director, and coach of many competitive Marriott Ward basketball teams.
He began his professional career in the trucking industry with Barton Truck Lines as a truck driver. The company eventually changed ownership to Motor Cargo Truck Lines where he held various managerial positions. He retired with 37 years of service from his employment there, where he still has many lifelong, close friends.
Ron loved and enjoyed his barn, his horses, training racehorses, camping, baseball (specifically his Cincinnati Reds), basketball, pheasant hunting and reading his many Louie Lamour books. Ron and Dixie loved to have parties and entertain on their property.
Ron's sense of humor could not be denied. He had a quick smile for all those lucky enough to be in his presence. His stories were entertaining. His family was the absolute focus and priority of his life. He was a son, brother, husband, uncle, grandpa, great grandpa and friend. He supported his wife and children in every way that a husband and father should.
After a long-awaited reunion, he is now reunited with his sweetheart of 58 years he couldn't wait to see Dixie again. Also awaiting him were his parents Orville Glen and Eleanor Leila Holmes, 2 brothers Sherman and LaMont Holmes, 1 sister Marilyn Walters and 1 great granddaughter Zoe Parker.
Ron is survived by his children Kim (Matt) Lyons, Mick (Sheri) Holmes, Wade (Julie) Holmes, Scott (Heather) Holmes, 18 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren with 1 arriving in January 2023 and siblings, Lois (Larry) Huston and Reed (Brenda) Holmes.
Funeral services are entrusted to Myers Mortuary in Ogden, Utah. Ron's services will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, at the Heritage Park LDS Ward meetinghouse at 1 p.m. A viewing will be held prior to funeral services from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meetinghouse address is 250 N 1500 W Ogden (Marriott), Utah 84404.
