Sumter, SC .......... Ronald Thomas Reed, age 83, beloved husband of 40 years to Rebecca P. Reed, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, at his residence.
Born in Cedartown, GA and raised in Center, Alabama, he was the son of the late Thomas Ulysses Reed and Myrtle Lucile Young Reed. Ron graduated from Cherokee High School in 1959 and then Joined the Air Force in 1960 where he trained to be an F-100 and F-102 airplane mechanic in North Africa. He served in many countries including Holland, Germany, Spain, and Canada. Ron was most proud of his service in Thailand during the Vietnam War where he served as a crew chief loading 500lb bombs onto F-4s. Ron also attended Survival School in Vietnam. After serving 26 years in the Air Force and being stationed at many different bases all over the world, Ron joined the Air National Guard. He received many honors and awards during his years of service to his country. After his retirement from the military, Ron graduated from Florence Darlington Technical College and received an Associate of Applied Science degree. He was a Lieutenant at Lee County Correctional Institute as a mounted correctional officer, where his love for horses began. Ron enjoyed camping, going to the lake, riding his horses, and spending time with his loving wife and his family. He loved Alabama Football, riding his motorcycle, and driving around in his convertible Mustang.
In addition to his wife Rebecca, he is survived by three sons, Monty Reed (Brandy) of Longs, SC, Tommy Cusumano (Wendy) of
Sumter, SC, and Michael Cusumano (Gwen) of Virginia Beach, VA; four daughters, Vonny Whittington (James) of Klamath Falls, OR, Kimberly Rains (Brack) of Lubbock, TX, April Hartwick (John) of Dalzell, SC, and Katie Buddin (Timmy) of
Sumter, SC; ten grandchildren, Abigail Clanton, Racheal Owen, Megan Swift, Cindell Collins, Albert Jiminez, Savanah Moseley, Emily Walker, Harper Cusumano, Jennings Cusumano, and Emily Buddin and seven great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death his sister, Joan Day.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, from 6:00-8:00 pm, at Bullock Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 11:00 am in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel. The burial will immediately follow the service in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors.
