Ronald Dewey Rust, lovingly known as "Rusty," passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the age of 77 at Wildwood Canyon Villas in Yucaipa, California, of natural causes.
Rusty was born in Ogden, Utah, to Phillip and Camilia (Jarvis) McPhie and raised in Washington Terrace in the Ogden area. He was later adopted by Dewey Rust. He grew up surrounded by his brothers Richard "Dick" Rust and Robert "Bob" McPhie, and his sisters Judy Harvey and Rosemary Bradshaw. Rusty graduated from Ogden High School before answering the call to serve his country.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy following high school and served on active duty during the Vietnam War. Afterward, he continued his commitment through the Naval Reserves while working as an aircraft electrician at Hill Air Force Base. His dedication led him back to active duty, where he served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise during both Persian Gulf Wars.
During his Naval career, he earned numerous awards and commendations, including the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (for service ending April 21, 1989), and the Battle Efficiency Award Ribbon. These honors stand as a record of his exemplary service, discipline, and devotion to the mission of the United States Navy.
Rusty's proudest role, however, was being a father. From his union with Sharon (Chennaux) Rust of Minnesota, he was blessed with three children: Barbara, Michael, and Scott. He is survived by his daughter Barbara and her husband Vincent Duro, his son Michael Rust, and his son Scott Rust and his wife Jennifer. He is also survived by his former spouse and the mother of his children, Sharon (Chennaux) Rust. Rusty's love extended deeply to his grandchildren: Sierra (Duro-Baguyo) and her husband Anthony Baguyo, Summer (Duro-Friare) and her husband Ruben Friare, Denver Duro and his fiancé Genesis Juarez, Zuriah (Rust-Mendes) and her husband Miles Mendes, and Dawson Duro and Alyssa Santos. He was also a proud great- grandfather to six great-grandchildren: Camellia Friare, Sage Baguyo, Ira Baguyo, Rue Friare, Alder Baguyo, and Kaua'i Lei Friare.
Rusty will be remembered for his devotion to family, his service to his country, and his strong work ethic. His legacy of love, perseverance, and honor will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
