Ronald Schmitz Obituary

Ronald Dean Schmitz, age 87, of Oshkosh, WI passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Ron was born on March 25, 1938 in Cherokee, Iowa.

He met the love of his life, Juanita (Nita) in high school and was smitten on day one. Ron and Nita were happily married for 69 years and very proud of the 6 children they raised together: Joe Schmitz (Katy); Lynn Daniels (Bill); Ann Bartlett (Chris); Beth Fluesmeier (John); Kelly Schmitz, Jeff Schmitz (Rebecca). Grandpa/Bapa adored his 18 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren (and counting).

Early on, Ron felt a duty to his country and joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for 12 years as Staff Sergeant. Ron received the bronze star for meritorious service during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam. Once honorably discharged, the family settled in Oshkosh, WI.

Ron was always scribbling ideas on any piece of paper he could find. He enjoyed woodcarving, molding with Sculpey clay, and drawing.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary (Cookie), infant son David, and his beloved dog Gus.

Visitation will be held at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, 830 S Westhaven Dr, Oshkosh, WI 54904 on Monday, February 16, 2026 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM followed by Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment with Military Honors will be held at Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
