Rondis Cavender Obituary

Rondis Cavender, 87, of Cross Lanes, formerly of Sissonville, went up to the "Spirit in the Sky" on January 12, 2024, at home after a short illness.

Rondis was born on April 29, 1936, in Sissonville. He is preceded in death by his father, Algie Ralph Cavender; mother, Glaphia Haynes Cavender; sister, Joyce Martin, and his beloved grandson, Colton Cavender.

He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston in 1954 and joined the Marine Corps for 4 years. He always quoted: "Once a Marine, always a Marine" and considered all Marines his brothers. He then graduated from West Virginia University in Morgantown with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering.

He is survived by Wanda, his loving wife of 47 years, children Rhonda (Dave) Titus of Maryland, and Lee (Natalie) of Georgia and Rondis Lee (Carmen), also of Georgia. He took great pride in his grandchildren: Austin, Chad, Lydia, Morgan, Chase, Trey, and Kayla; great grandchildren Bruce and Ollie; sister Wyona of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his aunt, Pat Whittington of Charleston, who was like a sister to him; nephew and nieces Steven, Debi and Sherry; and his former wife, Marilyn Cavender.

Rondis was a man of great character. His work ethic took him from being the plant manager at FMC Corporation in South Charleston, from which he retired, to being an entrepreneur. He owned and managed Cavender Greyhounds, LLC, and Cavender Kennel, LLC.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all being on his farm raising cattle and greyhounds and walking the hills and meadows communing with his God.

Rondis was charming, witty, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He had a world-class personality and loved to entertain. In any room, at any event, he enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone, and they all knew his name before he left.

Rondis now resides in the hearts and minds of those who love him and will miss his infectious smile, sense of humor and appreciation of fun for the remainder of their lives. He leaves behind a legacy of love, life, laughter and hard work.

He died like he lived: On His Own Terms.

A celebration of Rondis' life for friends and family will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 18, 2024 at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, 6837 Sissonville Dr., Sissonville, WV 25320 with Pastor Michael Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Sissonville Memorial Gardens, Sissonville.

A gathering of family and friends will begin at Noon on Thursday at the Funeral Home.

The family wants to thank the wonderful care provided to Rondis by the staff of HospiceCare of Charleston.
