Rory "Gene" Mathis, 54,
Leavenworth, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly after a short battle of cancer on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Gene was surrounded by loved ones and passed away pain free at home.
He was born March 1, 1971 in
Leavenworth, Kansas to Jessie Ray Mathis and Bonnie Jean Derringer.
Gene married his high school sweetheart Sheilah K Campbell on June 16, 1990 in
Leavenworth, Kansas. She survives at the home.
Survived by his daughter Heather Mathis (Corey Brown), son Joshua Mathis (Sierra), his granddaughters that he loved very much, Arianna Jones and Penellope Brown. His granddaughters called him Pacaw and he was not only Arianna's Pacaw but also her father figure that stepped up and helped raise her.
Gene is also survived by brothers Jessie Ray Mathis of
Leavenworth, Kansas and Chris Mathis of Ivy Bend, Missouri, and a sister Tina Schultz (Butch) of Ivy Bend, Missouri. His brother-in-law Scott Little and sister-in-law Kimberly Little of
Leavenworth, Kansas, In-laws Richard and Rose Campbell of
Leavenworth, Kansas. But Gene loved them so much and considered them his parents. Many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Ronald Eugene Mathis (Tracy Kramer).
Gene was such a hardworking man and sometimes worked two jobs to provide for his family. He was always willing to help anyone that needed it. He was a semi-truck driver for JB Hunt. He drove semi's for over 30 years.
His death was so unexpected and fast and his family is devastated.
Gene requested no service. Donations for the family can be made through his GoFundMe or sent directly to his wife Sheilah Mathis.
