Rosa Mae Baxter, daughter of the late R.C. Brown and the late Carrie Kibler Brown and stepdaughter of the late Mattie Boyd Brown, was born on June 24, 1945, in Newberry County, SC. She entered into rest on Friday, July 5, 2024, at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Rosa Mae Baxter was not just a community member but a pillar of strength and a beacon of hope. She worked as a healthcare professional for over 25 years, including private home care services, as a home health aide for an agency, and as a nurse's aide at Newberry Hospital. She was a trustee, a gospel choir member, a missionary, and a volunteer for the community food pantry at King Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. Upon relocating back to South Carolina, her love of faith and community continued to shine at Lower Mount Olive A.M.E. Church in Prosperity, where she was a member of the Senior Choir and a Missionary.
Rosa Mae Baxter's life was a symphony of love for family, friends, and her walk of faith. She was a righteous, prayerful woman who loved the lord. She enjoyed singing, dancing, and traveling. Her dedication to her family, friends, faith, and community was a testament to her commitment to light and love.
Rosa Mae Baxter was predeceased by her son, Leon Baxter and brothers, L.C. Brown, Johnnie Brown, Frankie Brown, James Oliver Boyd, Reverend Brady Boyd, Odell Boyd, Thomas L. Boyd, Murray Boyd, Jr. (Annie B.), and Jasper Leroy Boyd (Thelma).
Rosa Mae Baxter is survived by a large and loving family, a testament to the love and care she shared throughout her life. Her legacy lives on through her two sons, Henry Baxter, III (Sherwon Henderson) of
Newberry, SC, and Andrew (Raquel) Baxter of Newport News, VA, her daughter, Joann Baxter of Brooklyn, NY, and Keyshunda E. Boyd of
Newberry, SC; grandchildren: Travis Cannon, Markevis Jarell Baxter, Dequan Cromer, Malik Lyles, and Odasiti Joiner of
Newberry, SC; Kiron Massey of York, PA. Shaundi and Corey Best, Drew and Jalen Douglas of Brooklyn, NY. Kayan Willoughby, Tavia and Tavaris Peet, Elijah, Khalil, and Elondia Baxter of Virginia, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; sisters: Geneva Counts of Prosperity, SC, and Verdia Wise of
Newberry, SC; brothers-in-law: Furman Counts and Ellis Wise; sisters-in-law: Geraldine Brown, Mamie Boyd, Narvis Boyd, and Helen Summers; aunt: Trocell Brown of Charlotte, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Lower Mt. Olive AME Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Pratt Funeral Home.
