Rose M. Devins passed away peacefully at home with her daughter and son-in-law on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the age of 98. Born in Newark, NJ she was the third child of Samuel and Mary Dellarciprete who emigrated from Italy in the early 1900's. She, her parents and two brothers, Eugene and Alexander, became naturalized citizens in 1929 under the Act of March 4, 1929 for immigrants who served honorably in World War I, which her father had. Thereafter, they were known as the Dellar family.
Her mother, Mary, died when she was in her early teens and from then on, Rose oversaw the cooking and homemaking for her father and two brothers. In later years, her family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors all benefited from the wonderful meals – and especially baked goods – that she had learned to make and shared with everyone.
Her family moved to Bloomfield, and shortly after World War II, she met her future husband, Bill, at a party with some friends. It was love at first sight and the two were married on November 27, 1949 at Sacred Heart Church, Newark, NJ. The couple moved to Union, NJ, where they raised their 3 children and resided ever since. Their marriage lasted almost 55 years shortened only by the passing of her beloved Bill in 2004. One of her great joys was being invited to a mass at St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral, Newark, NJ in 1999 for couples who had been married for 50 years. They also received a certificate honoring that fact from Pope John Paul II, which she held very dear.
Rose was secretary for the Carpenter's Resilient Flooring, Local 2212 for 20 years, (Now United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Local 251). She was also a proficient seamstress. She loved all kinds of music and was frequently heard humming and singing while cooking (her favorite pastime!). Her favorite was always the Swing era music of her youth, which she would listen to and sing along with until her passing. She loved to read, especially the newspaper and mysteries, enjoyed traveling with her beloved husband, and making "field trips" to the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City.
Rose is predeceased by her husband William, brothers Eugene Dellare and Alexander Dellar. Rose is survived by her two sons; William C. Devins and his wife Pamela Snelson; Richard Devins and his wife Jill; and her daughter Rosanne D. Courtien and her husband Arthur. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Contributions in Rose's memory may be made to St. Michael's Church, 1212 Kelly St., Union, NJ 07083
