Rose Mary Smith, age 77, of Pittsburgh passed away on February 1, 2026.

Rose was born to the late William and Mary Chapko on April 17, 1948. Rose graduated from Bishop Boyle High School. She furthered her education at CCAC, attaining a nursing certificate; and Carlow University, attaining a bachelor's degree in nursing. After college, Rose served as a proud nurse at St. Francis and Jefferson Hospitals for almost 60 years.

Rose was a member of the Ladies of Charity and the Funeral Choir at Church of the Resurrection, St. Teresa of Kolkata Parish. She also took great pride in her gardening section at the church. She also volunteered as a hospice nurse.

Rose is predeceased by her parents, siblings, Emory and Ann Papuga; mother-in-law Virginia smith; sister-in-law LeeAnn Smith; very special chosen family, Wilmer (Rosemary) Eichler and John Moroney.

She is survived by her children, Kent (Daniela) Smith and Malora (Scott) Britton; her siblings, Louise (Michael) Kosar, Williamm Chapko, Michael Chapko, John Chapko, and Stephen (Sharron) Chapko; her adopted children, Kelly (Christopher) Antalek, and their children, Lucas, Josephine, and Lillian, and Joseph (Kathleen) Papuga, and their children Grayson and Liam; and many other nieces and nephews.

Rose was the purest definition of an angel, whose wings were always hidden.

Family and friends welcome on Thursday, February 5th from 1pm-3pm and 5pm-8pm, at 2630 West Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15216, 412-531-4000. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Church of the Resurrection, Saint Teresa of Kolkata Parish, 1100 Creedmore Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15226, on Friday, February 6th at 10am. Interment will immediately follow at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.

Rose and I spent many years together as GI nurses. She worked so hard and treated every one of her patients with respect and compassion. Rose was a ray of sunshine. I am sure that she will be missed by all.
