Rose Marie Baker Wright

September 27, 1929 – January 5, 2026

Rose was born in San Saba, Texas to John Lee and Pansy Margaret Moore Baker. During her younger years, her daddy would travel from orchid to orchid in the fall gathering pecans. A sweet memory that she had while at the orchids was that her momma would make small fires in them to warm up sweet potatoes. Another memory was how she learned to drive a Model – T while her daddy rolled cigarettes.

Rose graduated from San Saba in 1947. During her high school years, she loved homemaking classes with her teacher Mrs. Holland. She also ran for Rodeo Queen which she successfully won by selling the most rodeo tickets.

After graduation, she married Richard Wright on August 3, 1947. From San Saba they traveled to Blanco, Texas. In Blanco they attended the local Church of Christ. One Sunday morning after the church service, the preacher, who they both knew married them. They honeymooned in San Antonio.

They started their life living in San Saba, Texas. Their friends found joy in pranking the newlyweds. One of the pranks was to make it seem like a tractor was on fire. When Richard rushed out of the house that’s when he realized the tractor wasn’t one fire and that he had been pranked. Another one was something dealing with an outhouse, a shot gun and people scattering, just imagine how that went.

They welcomed a bouncing baby boy on November 30, 1949, Jackie Bob. While Rose was in labor, Dr Felps loaded up Richard and took him quail hunting. Richard seemed concerned and Dr Felps assured him she would be fine. Rose was not happy at all. But Dr Felps was right, she was fine.

Rose and Richard had two more children; Joe was born in 1953 and Patty Sue in 1959. After Patty Sue, the family was complete.

Rose was a fulltime housewife, mother and rancher.

During the early years, they moved numerous times to various ranches across Texas. One ranch in West Texas she picked up dead wool to buy her first sewing machine. The last move was to Marble Falls in 1958 from Thorndale Texas.

Rose loved to go hunting and fishing with Richard. One hunting story involved the new Church of Christ preacher. Lon asked the preacher if he would like to come out to hunt a deer. The preacher that we all knew and loved was Holton George. Of course he took him up on the offer. Rose heard a shot, went down in the pasture, and there stood the preacher with his first deer. Between Rose and Holton, they loaded the deer up and brought it back to the house. Holton had just bagged his first deer and with that the dilemma presented itself, he had never dressed a deer. Rose wondered how she was going to explain to a preacher how to dress a deer. With no explanation she commenced in dressing the deer for him.

She was a seamstress for a few prominent women in Marble Falls. She sewed numerous garments over several years. She also sewed shirts for a neighbor, Fritz Bruns. This man had such long arms that it was hard for him to find shirts to fit him, so Rose started making his shirts.

Once the family started expanding, Rose taught Vicki a variety of things around the house. Such as how to cook, sew and canned vegetables. She also taught Vicki how to use a wringer washer. If you ask Vicki, she remembers that Rose was very patient during those moments. The whole family would tell you something or another when it came to Rose/ Maw Maw. Another family remembered she was forgiving and not judgmental.

During fall of 1985, Rose had a farming accident while emptying feed for the feeder hogs. She got her right hand caught in the auger cutting off her thumb and fingers. While talking to Dr. Davis she expressed her concerns that she wanted to be able to hunt deer after the reattachment. Dr. Davis was able to reattach the thumb and fingers, through the healing process and rehab she was able to gain use of her hand. That was the beginning of the crooked finger that we all knew and loved.

Rose lost the love of her life, Richard, on January 4, 2001, after 53 years of marriage. During that summer, her nephew Jimmy Baker brought her a companion, a donkey of all sorts. Rose named him JR, short for Jimmy Richard. Rose and JR had a love hate relationship. JR would get into things you would not even dream about. When he traveled by the house, he would stand at the yard fence braying for Momma to come out and feed him cookies. The braying worked every time. JR lived his best life on the ranch until the Spring of 2019.

In the later years, she had bought a 4-wheeler. On the first day of deer season in the early 2000’s, she rode her 4-wheeler to the deer stand and ended up running into a tree by her stand. When she was questioned about how that happened, she said she had turned her headlights off so she wouldn’t scare the deer off.

Rose lived her last years with her daughter, Patty Sue and her husband, Tom Ed in West Texas. She continued to sew, cook and do embroidery during those years. She missed her wildlife and trees. Every year she would come back to Marble Falls and hunt the first weekend of deer season. She loved those times to be in her home and reminisced about the memories that were made in her home with family and friends.

August of 2025, Rose traveled back to a one of her favorite places, Ruidoso, New Mexico on Labor Day weekend. She loved to shop at Martha’s Fabric. She was able to shop and pick out material, and was never questioned why she needed it, it was just because. The next morning, she asked if she could go back to the material shop that day, of course away she went. Once again buying more fabric with no questions asked, just because.

Rose celebrated her 96th birthday at the ranch in September with family and friends.

Rose is survived by her kids, Jackie Bob (Vicki), and Patty Sue (Tom Ed). Her grandkids, Cole, Michael Seth, Jerimi (Brian), Lonnie Joe (Sonya), Tanner (Cadie), Seth and Hanna Rose. She also had 7 great grands, Trey, Tripp, Grayson, Gabe, Krew, Gunner and Blakely. Numerous nieces and nephews. She also Clift Clark (Suzanne) as her son. Rose was preceded in death by her parents, John Lee and Pansy Baker, her loving husband, Richard Wright, her son, Joe Wright, brother, J. B. Baker, sister-n-law Louise Baker, brother-n-law, Melvin Wright and sister-n-law Shirley Wright.

Things she loved, Jesus Christ our savior, Richard, her three kids, her grand-kids, her great-grand kids, friends, using her hands by piecing quilts, sewing, embroidery, coffee, crackers, biscuits and Dr. Peppers.

Rose will be missed by family and friends. We all have the memories that have been left in our hearts to remember her by.
