A Mass of Christian Burial for Rosemary McCarthy, 100, of Newark, will be held at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 10 A.M., Thursday, May 11, 2023, with Msgr. Paul Enke as celebrant. Friends and family may call at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Newark.
A longtime parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, Rosemary died at SharonBrooke Senior Living on Monday, May 8, 2023. She was born in Noblesville, Indiana on February 17, 1923, to the late Percey P. and Drusilla (Harold) Brown.
Rosemary graduated from Steele High School in 1941 and attended Sinclair College for 2 years. She joined the Iota Tau Lambda sorority and eventually became the national college sorority president. She worked in advertising with the Dayton Daily News and was part-time with the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Credit Union
On April 23, 1948, Rosemary married William "Mack" McCarthy. In 1962, Mack was transferred from Wright-Patterson to the Newark Air-Force Base, so the couple moved from Dayton and built a house in Licking County where they raised twins, Dennis and Denise.
After the children were raised and Mack passed away, Rosemary re-discovered her love of dancing and became involved with the Fred Astaire Dance Studio where she mentored other dancers, danced in many competitions and won numerous awards.
Through the years Rosemary did work for the Board of Elections where she first became involved during the Truman era. She was a member of NARFE and volunteered countless hours to organizations such as the American Red Cross and Licking County Players. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the St. Edward Resurrection Funeral Choir, which she helped to coordinate with Fr. Lawry.
She will be greatly missed by her children, Dennis (Kathy) McCarthy and Denise Short; grandchildren, Crystal (Matthew) Marks, Benjamin (Teresa) Short, and Nicole (Jon) Collins; great-grandchildren, Gracie Short, Riley Collins, Lacie Collins, and Kayley Collins.
In addition to her parents, Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband, William "Mack" McCarthy; son-in-law, Dean Short; and brother, Harold (Ruth) Brown.
Memorials in Rosemary's name can be made to the American Red Cross.
