ROSLYN "ROZ" HILL (Castrogiovanni), 78, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and neighbor, passed away on October 28, 2025 in the company of family.
The eldest of three children of Anthony Castrogiovanni and Frances (Dodaro), Roz was born on September 23, 1947. Whether advocating for child welfare, holding court at Carrabba's on Voss with friends and family, or setting up elaborate, idyllic holiday villages with her grandchildren, she was attentive to everything, giving fully of herself and her immense intellectual, spiritual, social, and emotional capacities.
In her daily interactions, she embodied love, generosity, honesty, humor, style, and unflappable conviction to make the world more just.
Born in Rockford, IL, Roz pursued higher education at St. Mary's College in South Bend, IN. There, she met her husband, Stephen Hill, a Notre Dame student, native Texan, and raconteur extraordinaire. The addition of the couple's two children, Anthony (Tony) and Jeffrey (Jeff), made for a complete family.
After stints in Chicago and Roz's hometown of Rockford, the quartet embraced a new chapter in Houston in 1984. They quickly found community at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church and St. Thomas High School, which proved indispensable for Roz, Tony, and Jeff in 1989, when Steve tragically passed away at the age of 42.
For the past forty-plus years, Roz harnessed her skills as a gregarious connector and passionate social justice advocate. She enmeshed herself in child welfare work, helping to establish the Children's Assessment Center, which provides treatment and advocacy for sexually abused children. She led the aid-organization the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, as executive director. And, she worked as a formidable fundraiser for the Archdiocese of Houston-Galveston, galvanizing the capital campaign around the construction of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Her leadership touched the lives of innumerable Houstonians; her legacy will live on in the missions of these institutions and all those whom she loved and mentored.
In the past few years, her body and nervous system proved increasingly uncooperative; eventually, the cause was uncovered as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare, neurodegenerative condition. Nevertheless, she remained attentive and intellectually curious. Even in recent weeks, she sought out details and progress reports on her grandchildren, friends, and loved ones, engaging - reciprocally and inquisitively - with the many folks who stopped by to share a moment.
Roz is survived by her sons, Tony (Rebecca) Hill and Jeff (Jennifer) Hill; six grandchildren, Olivia, Stephen, Anthony, Andrew, Nicholas, and Mathew; sister, Carla Cox; brother-in-law Jim Knutson, and three nieces and one nephew. She was predeceased by her parents, Tony and Fran Castrogiovanni; husband, Steve; and sister, Frances Knutson.
A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc, Houston, Texas 77024. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc, Houston, TX 77024.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road in Rockford, Illinois.
