Rowena Gardner Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 18, 2026.
Rowena Catherine Gardner, born on the 2nd of April 1933, in the city of Baltimore, Maryland, was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew her. Her journey on this earth came to a peaceful conclusion on the 17th of February 2026, in Westminster, Maryland, surrounded by the love of her family. Rowena's life was a testament to the power of love, and the beauty of a life well-lived.

In 1952, Rowena graduated from Ellicott City High School, embarking on a path that would lead her to touch countless lives. Her love story began when she married her beloved husband, James Gardner, in 1952, and together they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering companionship. Their family grew with the addition of their sons, Robert and wife Ann Marie who found warmth in Port Richey, Florida, and Charles and his wife Dawn who made their home in Eldersburg, Maryland.

Rowena's professional life was as diverse and vibrant as she was, with roles that ranged from driving a school bus, working at Ft. Meade and working for the Board of Education. Her dedication to nurturing minds shone brightly during her time as a teacher's aide at a high school, a role from which she eventually retired, leaving behind inspired students and grateful colleagues.

Rowena's interests were as lively as her spirit. She was an extraordinary dancer and also enjoyed bowling and golf. She had a passion for music and played the accordion and the organ for most of her life. She created lasting memories with lifelong friends from school, with whom she and James bought a beach house nearby in Bethany Beach, Delaware. There, they spent countless hours basking in the joy of each other's company, strengthening the bonds that had been formed in their youth.

Adventurous and spirited, Rowena embraced life's journey with a loving heart, always ready to embark on a new adventure, whether it be a dance across the floor or a trip to the beach. She was a source of inspiration to her grandchildren: Robert Gardner Jr. and his wife Tina, Michelle Cunningham, Jamie Oxenford and her husband Dave, Stephanie Jacobs and her husband Drew, Andrew Gardner and his wife Jane, and Catherine Gardner; she is also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Rowena was predeceased by her cherished grandson Kevin Gardner.

Though she has left this world, the legacy of Rowena Catherine Gardner endures in the hearts of her loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and all who were blessed to know her. Her life was a melody of joy and faith. As we celebrate her life, we are reminded of the power of a soul dedicated to fostering connections and living each day with purpose and passion.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may donate to Bridging Life Hospice in Westminster, Maryland.

A Memorial Visitation will be held at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel on Saturday, March 28 from 10 AM - 12 PM, followed by a Memorial Service at 12:00 PM.
