Roy Blackwelder Obituary

Roy Davis Blackwelder, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2026, surrounded by his family after a long and well-lived life.

Born on November 5, 1933, in Statesville, North Carolina, Roy was the son of the late Clarence Neal Blackwelder and Mary Perry Blackwelder. From riding his bike around town with his dog in the basket to famously releasing his pet snake during his mother’s church circle meeting, Roy embraced adventure and curiosity from an early age.

He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1953 and began his career in education in Thomasville. Shortly thereafter, he served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

On September 7, 1957, Roy married the love of his life, Carol Jeanette Weaver of Olin, North Carolina. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and education, making their home in High Point and both teaching in Guilford County.

Roy devoted over thirty years to teaching science and mathematics in Thomasville and High Point middle and high schools. A gifted educator, he left a lasting impression on generations of students, many of whom carried his lessons far beyond the classroom.

Roy and Carol were active members of Montlieu Avenue United Methodist Church in High Point, serving in numerous roles. Roy even built the church cross, as well as crosses for several other churches in the area. Later, the couple joined Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina.

During the summers and following his retirement in 1984, Roy ran a carpentry and home improvement business with his best friend, Lee Miller. He loved helping people, often rushing out the door mid-meal when a church member or neighbor called for assistance. In later years, his generosity and mentorship continued through his role as an angel investor and trusted advisor to Fields Landscaping Co. Inc., a Greensboro-based business founded by his family. Roy took great pride in the company’s growth and was always eager to share his wisdom. He was a true teacher in every sense of the word and will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Roy’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Olin Methodist Church, where he and Carol were married nearly 68 years ago. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Roy is survived by his devoted wife, Carol Blackwelder; his twin daughters, Miriam Fields and husband Craig, and Ashley Williams and husband David; his grandchildren, Spencer Slone and husband Charlie, Connor Fields and wife Courtney, and Audrey Fields; and his great-grandchildren, Paisley Fields and Ryder Slone. He was preceded in death by his grandson Tyler David Williams (2011).

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tyler David Williams Memorial Scholarship, managed by the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, 301 N Elm St #100, Greensboro, NC 27401.
